The post will involve good attention to detail, dealing with telephone enquiries, and general laboratory housekeeping.

The post involves receiving and booking in specimen samples, inputting data to the laboratory information systems, filing and general administration work.

The post holder will be expected to follow Standard Operating Procedures, have good IT skills, and a versatile approach to working.

Good communication skills, attention to detail, accuracy and customer service skills are key to this job role.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and the desire to provide a service of the highest quality.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be a part of a team of Biomedical Scientists and Biomedical support workers delivering a high-quality Pathology service based on the effective use of the Quality Management System.

Prepare samples for analysis by sorting, labelling them with Laboratory number barcode and entering patient demographics and technical laboratory data onto the Laboratory Information System.

Attend all mandatory and statutory training.

Ensure that the workplace and workbenches are kept clean and tidy.

Maintain a flexible approach to the post in order to rapidly assimilate changes in workload, patterns and requirements.

Ensure that reagents are stored and used according to manufacturer and laboratory procedures.

Support the biomedical scientist staff in the processing of samples.

Subject to competence assessment the post holder may discharge technical duties as part of a small team outside core hours to support the laboratory service.

Participate in effective stock control of reagents and consumables.

Use the Pathology inventory management system.

Carry out postal duties including Incoming mail, outgoing mail and referred samples

To assist with administrative tasks as directed by the senior team

Can label and request all samples from diverse screening programs

Answer phone calls on  respond to the needs of Pathology Users and Consultant.

Educations, Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE Mathematics & English or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • GSCE Science
  • Trained on CAMIS and ICE system

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Good Computer Skills including word
Desirable criteria
  • Employment in the NHS
  • Knowledge of Pathology and of sciences
  • Experience of working in a customer service environment
