Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part-time Antenatal Screening Phlebotomist / Band 3- Health Care Assistant post to join our Antenatal and Newborn screening team within the Northampton General Hospital Maternity Unit.

We are seeking a confident motivated and experienced Phlebotomist or Health Care Assistant/ Maternity Support Worker with NVQ level 3 completed in addition to a competency certificate or venepuncture course who is competent in venepuncture.  You will need to be innovative, keen to share and develop skills to support our screening team. You should have an interest in all aspects of antenatal screening and working with families. You must have excellent communication skills, be compassionate, have good IT skills (particularly Microsoft Word and Excel as you will be expected to produce reports for the screening programmes), be flexible, a team player, and able to use your initiative to assist with the delivery of high-quality specialised care to our mothers and their families. Attention to detail is essential. You would be coming to join our friendly team for three days a week between Monday and Friday. 

Applicants are invited from enthusiastic candidates that have experience working as a Health Care Assistant/ Maternity Support Worker or Phlebotomist in a clinical setting in addition to having administrative and IT skills.

Main duties of the job

To provide a phlebotomy service for the antenatal screening programmes under the supervision of a qualified midwife within the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Team.

To support the delivery of safe and quality assured antenatal screening programmes locally, working within agreed national and local guidelines. To ensure women complete their screening pathway.

To promote good communication that supports the dignity and care of the patients.  Assist in maintaining a safe working environment and the provision of care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Patient / Client Care

To provide a phlebotomy service to all women requiring screening and collection of other specimens as required.

Respect individuals’ dignity, wishes and beliefs and obtains their consent for blood sampling.

Undertake blood sampling correctly, and in line with legislation, policies and procedures and/or established protocols.

Monitor individuals whilst carrying out the sampling and identify and report any changes in the individual’s health and wellbeing.

Label and transport samples in line with legislation, policies and procedures.

Record, maintain, transmit and store information relating to the delivery of care services either electronically or on paper.

Prepare and undertake, under the direction of the registered midwife, agreed ongoing clinical and clerical activities.

To provide other clinical functions not requiring a national professional qualification but for which local training has been given and competency confirmed.

To assist the registered midwife in the maintenance of the patient’s programme of care.

Produce Excel based reports for the antenatal screening programme.

To follow up patients that may not have completed the screening pathway and record information within the patients handheld and electronic records.

Be familiar and adhere to approved Trust policies and standards of care/practice.

To treat as confidential all information obtained in the course of your work.

Maintain a flexible approach to the post in order to rapidly assimilate changes in workload, patterns and requirements.

Alert their line manager when users of the service are adversely affected.

Maintain safety of patients, personal clothing and property in accordance with agreed policies related to security and confidentiality.

Recognise the Equality and Diversity of patients, clients, relatives and multi-disciplinary groups

Maintain a clean and tidy environment, including, store cupboards, treatment room and equipment used for procedures.

Undertake the cleaning of work area equipment, according to policy and procedure. 

Ensure adherence to the infection control policy.

Report any safeguarding concerns in line with trust and national policies.

Adhere to the Data Protection Act.

Any other duties as required by the needs of the service.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Competent at venepuncture
  • Have the ability and knowledge to deal with an emergency situation.
  • To ensure up to date with mandatory training, statutory mandatory

and directorate specific.

  • To be actively involved in own self – development.
  • To be able to work within own sphere of practice.
  • Working knowledge and experience of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • To have an understanding of the principles of antenatal screening

Communication

  • Report any concerns / incidents relating to patient health, and safety of the environment to a qualified midwife.
  • Report any concerns regarding safeguarding issues to a qualified midwife.
  • Provide clear and concise verbal communication to patients, clients and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Provide clear and concise written documentation as per Trust guidance.
  • Provide reports and statistics in relation to the Antenatal Screening Programmes.
  • Communicate in line with the legislation and policies governing the communication of information.

Educations, Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 3 in healthcare
  • Venepuncture training and experience

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience of working with women and families
  • Previous healthcare experience, either NHS or care setting
  • IT literate
  • Use of Microsoft Excel to produce statistics
  • Role of the midwife
  • Knowledge of infection control procedures
  • Experience in handling pathology samples
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the antenatal screening programmes
  • Experience in hospital-based IT systems; e.g. Careflow maternity, ICE etc
