Junior Sister/ Junior Charge Nurse

We are expanding our team and  would welcome enthusiastic, highly motivated nurses to join our busy team working within Chemotherapy Suite and Outpatient Department in the Centre for Oncology. We are a busy and energetic department with dedicated hard working teams striving to provide best possible care to patients. In return we offer an experienced, supportive environment to stimulate ideas and facilitate development of service improvements. 

The successful candidate will work as part of the multidisciplinary team providing high quality clinical care to cancer patients as well as supporting junior colleagues to learn and develop their skills. Patients will be attending appointments at a number of stages throughout treatment and their needs will change as they progress through the pathway. The post holder will collaborate with the Sister by maintaining smooth daily operations and workflow in the department. They will assist in the coordination of safe patient care including appropriate staffing levels, allocating and supervising appropriate duties.

They will utilise a range of skills to ensure patients have a smooth transition through services within the department and that staff are supported and engaged in delivering excellent care. 

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

The department is split between the Chemotherapy Suite and Oncology outpatients in which the post holder will be required to work in both areas depending on the needs of the service. Chemotherapy Suite: Consists of 22 chairs. The Nursing team is supported by the pharmacy team and a Registrar on a daily basis and from time to time members of the Macmillan team and the Hair and beauty coordinator. Within the department we also offer support to Haematology outpatients and EAB.

Nursing roles in the Chemotherapy suite:

  • Coordinator- The coordinator will be the Nurse in charge of the Chemotherapy suite, ensuring overall safety and smooth running of the department.
  • Treating nurse- The case load of patients will be divided between two teams in the Chemotherapy suite. The treating Nurse will work alongside 1 - 2 other Nurses, on their side/ team, assessing and administering treatments.
  • Chemotherapy support- The Chemo support Nurse will assist with assessing patients, cannulating and help with jobs to ensure flow within the department is safe and efficient throughout the day. 

Oncology Outpatient Department: Consists of 12 examination rooms in the clinic area. A number of Health Care Assistants and a Nurse work in the department on a daily basis ensuring that clinics are running effectively and safely. The Health Care Assistants will oversee 3 - 4 clinics assisting the Doctors with notes, ECG’s and administer systemic anti-cancer therapies.

  • To have undertaken or have a willingness to undertake the SACT (systemic anti-cancer therapy) course to facilitate administration of SACT within the department.
  • To have undertaken or have a willingness to undertake further training such as triage and pre-chemotherapy assessment training.

  • Assist the Sister/ Charge nurse in the monitoring of workload and skill mix, planning off duty and ensuring the ward operates effectively and safely.
  • Assist the Sister/ Charge nurse in the completion of a training needs analysis and ensure compliance of the team with Trust expectations in relation to mandatory training and appraisals.
  • Assist the Sister/ Charge nurse in managing the team in accordance with Trust policies and procedure
