Job overview

We would like to invite applications from person centered individuals who would like to make a difference to the experience of children, young people and families attending the children's out patient department.

You will work as part of the multidisciplinary team under the supervision of senior colleagues, carrying out and recording routine measurements. There is scope to extend the role for blood taking and carrying out ECG monitoring following successful probation and training. 

Main duties of the job

Work as an effective member of the team, providing high quality care for patients under the supervision of a registered health care professional.  Promote good communication that supports the dignity, care and safety of the patients.  Assist in maintaining a safe working environment and the provision of compassionate care.

Provide a friendly, courteous and efficient reception service greeting parents and children upon arrival. Understand the work of the outpatient team and take a proactive role in ensuring the smooth running of all clinics.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Maintain safety of patients, personal clothing and property in accordance with agreed policies 
related to security and confidentiality.


The collection of specimens and transporting samples to the appropriate laboratories i.e. stool, 
urine, sputum and wound samples.


Recognising the Equality and Diversity of patients, clients, relatives and multi- disciplinary 
groups by supporting ant-discriminatory practice & acknowledging patients personal beliefs 
and identity.


Maintaining a clean and tidy environment, including clinic rooms, store cupboards, sluice, 
treatment rooms and equipment used for procedures.


Undertaking the cleaning of clinical equipment, according to policy and procedure. Make 
effective use of the infection control policy. 

Take and record vital signs as requested, i.e. temperature, pulse, respiration and blood 
pressure, oxygen saturation and reporting any abnormalities/concerns to the clinician.


Undertaking the cleaning of examination areas, suction, oxygen, lockers and prepare for next 
appointment, obtaining any essential equipment. 


Report any concerns / incidents relating to patient health, and safety of the environment to a 
registered nurse/ healthcare practitioner 


Provide clear and concise verbal communication to patients, clients and multi-disciplinary 
teams.

Provide clear and concise written documentation as per Trust guidance.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE level Maths and English
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ level 2 or 3 in Health Care

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Understand the role of the healthcare assistant
  • Able to work in multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in the NHS
  • IT literate
