Job overview

Carry out routine health monitoring for children and document accurately

Chaperone patients whilst doctor carries out examinations. 

Assist with the smooth running of individual clinics and system booking on a day to day basis.

Provide cover for the reception area greeting patients and visitors and dealing with enquiries.

Liaise with Members of the Trust to include Medical Secretaries, Medical Records, Consultants.

Main duties of the job

To provide a friendly, courteous and efficient reception service greeting parents and children upon arrival.  To understand the work of the outpatient team and take a proactive role in ensuring the smooth running of all clinics

To accurately measure and accurately record children’s observations, weight, height, urinalysis etc., reporting any abnormalities to the clinician.

Ensure all information is given to patients both verbal and written

Ensure adequate and economical levels of stock items are ordered and maintained.

Receive, action and forward messages as necessary.

Escort children and their families within the hospital.

 Ensure children’s specimens are taken to the laboratory as required.

 Be responsible for the cleanliness and day to day maintenance of the outpatient department including the cleaning of medical equipment.  Ensuring there is adequate medical equipment and stationary in clinic rooms.

Apply communication and negotiating skills to form professional relationships with parents and children, respecting their views, culture, individuality and diversity.

Person specification

Education, training and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Willingness to undertake NVQ level 3
  • NVQ 2 or above

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in Customer Service
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a health care setting
  • Basic Health Care Assistant competencies achieved
  • Experience of working in Children’s Outpatients

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good verbal and Non verbal communication, written and listening skills
  • Able to work without direct supervision and able to seek support.
  • Planning and organisational skills
Desirable criteria
  • Willingness to undertake further training
