Job overview

Do you have a passion for developing staff and ensuring high standards of quality care are at the core of clinical practice? Do you want to lead on delivering training to both new and existing staff to ensure that they deliver patient centred care that is clinically effective and safe?

We are looking for an experienced Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist who is enthusiastic about teaching and supporting staff to grow their career within this setting. The role is crucial in enabling staff to deliver high quality care and there is a clear focus on working alongside staff in the clinical areas.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of therapies and lead on some of the following workforce developments; preceptorship, in-service training, international recruitment, return to practice, development roles, review of competencies & job descriptions. 

The successful candidate will have significant experience working in an acute hospital setting. The candidate will have excellent time management, able to work to deadlines and be adaptable and personable. The successful candidate will have the ability to work autonomously and feel confident teaching colleagues and leading and implementing change. 

The successful candidate will report directly to the Head of therapies & enablement centre. This role will be based with the inpatient therapies team, with involvement as necessary with staff working in the enablement centre and hand therapy.  

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work clinically, predominantly in a teaching/mentoring capacity. Registered Physio's are expected to work as part of the Respiratory on-call physio rota which involves overnight (until 10pm) and weekend working. 

To lead on the development, planning and delivery of education, training and professional development for the therapies team, including preceptorship, international recruitment, return to practice and apprenticeships.

To plan and co-ordinate all student placements, providing ongoing support to both students and educators during these placements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Staff induction, probation and capability

 Oversee the planning and provision of a structured local induction programme for new clinical staff, ensuring that competencies are assessed as well as Personal Development Plans in place / reviewed during their preceptorship/induction period in conjunction with relevant Clinical lead.

 Oversee the induction of international recruits and return to practice to ensure they are orientated to the NHS and educated on local needs. Addressing and understanding there will be increased pastoral needs in additional skills and knowledge.

 Where staff are shown not to be undertaking or achieving clinical competencies, to highlight concerns to the relevant manager and support them in the procedures that follow as appropriate. Providing documentation of observations / interactions.

 Continuing professional development

 In collaboration with clinical teams and therapy managers, identify the education, training and development needs of all therapy team clinical staff and use this information to assist with the development of a comprehensive Training Needs Analysis (TNA) for the dept.

 Work with the CPD group and learning & development team to allocate funds for the therapies dept. in line with the TNA and deal with enquires regarding the allocation.

 To work with the learning & development team and therapy admin team to ensure that staff training records are maintained and updated in accordance with Trust protocols.

 Provide clinical teaching to OT, PT and TI staff within own competence, including sessions to large groups.

 To ensure that all training provided by the teams are well designed / appropriate and that trainees and trainers receive appropriate supervision, mentoring and feedback.

 To ensure that the training and education provided meets the standards required of professional accreditations, Higher Education Institutes and other relevant educational bodies e.g. OFSTED.

 Ensure training and developments are in line with professional developments in OT/Physio and are underpinned by evidence-based practice.

 To be responsible for identifying resources or facilities necessary for the training and education of therapies staff.

 To assist in the definition of training and educational standards for therapies staff / services.

 Coordinate and carry out ‘in-house’ therapy training such as manual handling, mental capacity and cognition training with support of senior clinicians.

 To support peer group leads in arranging meetings and ensuring actions are completed.  

 Provide supervision and mentorship, within scope of clinical competency, which is underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience to support staff. Giving difficult but constructive feedback to staff about performance. Working with staff that may be struggling to meet clinical competencies, giving honest feedback to staff, and providing reports to management as required.  

 Support newly registered staff, spending 1:1 clinical time with staff where necessary.

 Maintaining confidentiality regarding staff capability, managing sensitive situations, and providing professional judgements and feedback on staff clinical capabilities. Recording evidence for personal files.

 Communicate in an effective and timely manner to ensure training needs of the department are being met, recorded, and monitored effectively.

 Promote effective communication within the department to help facilitate an environment which promotes learning through experience.

 Ensure there are appropriate channels / forums for staff to highlight specific training needs.

 Leading on the review and updating of clinical competencies band 2-7 to ensure staff skills are meeting service needs.
