Job overview
The Urology Centre opened in its current location in 2012 following a generous donation by local businessman, Alfred Staden.
The unit consists of 4 treatment/ consulting rooms and a procedure room where we perform procedures under local anaesthetic such as Trans-Perineal Prostate biopsies (LATP), Flexible Cystoscopies and Trans- Urethral laser Ablation of Bladder Tumours (TULA).
Alongside the procedure room, we also run daily Nurse led lists of flow rates, trial without catheters and catheter changes.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate Healthcare assistant, who has an interest and/ or experience in Urology, to join our team.
Main duties of the job
Assist in the provision of nursing care in relation to:
Safe manual handling of patients, after establishing best method.
The collection of specimens, i.e. clean catch urine; midstream urine and catheter specimen of urine.
Documenting admission details on relevant procedure paperwork.
Assist patients in meeting their continence needs.
Recognising the Equality and Diversity of patients, relatives and multi- disciplinary groups by supporting non- discriminatory practice and acknowledging the patients’ personal beliefs and identity.
Make effective use of Infection Prevention policies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Specialist Clinical
To work using own initiative in planning workloads and working effectively within the team.
To prepare patients for their appointments (including recording observations/obtaining samples) ensuring dignity; personal wishes and beliefs are respected.
Ensure the patient is aware and involved in their plan of care and that consent has been obtained for any procedures that are to take place.
To ensure clinical rooms are equipped with all necessary items pre-procedure.
To assist the Specialist staff, including Consultants, with the daily clinic activity in the Urology Centre including procedure lists/cases; ensuring strict aseptic technique is used and the cleaning of equipment is maintained.
To gain knowledge and understanding of the procedures performed.
Admin duties
To admit/discharge patients using the relevant IT systems, ensuring the appropriate information has been given.
Ensure accurate records have been completed, including outcome forms.
To report any safety concerns within the department and document.
To ensure any ordering of stock and maintaining of stock levels is completed.
To manage time effectively.
Training needs
To undertake training to be able to meet the core competencies and extended role requirements, including an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the urinary tract (incl. common disorders/signs and symptoms).
To understand the rationale behind the need for Flow rate Testing and Bladder scans.
To ensure knowledge is up to date to make decisions on the results of these tests and be able to identify when a test may need repeating or the results need escalating.
To be willing to undertake further training and obtain expanded competencies specific to the role.

Educations, Training and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- English and Maths qualifications at GCSE grade C or equivalent
- Care certificate or willingness to work towards
Desirable criteria
- NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care or similar area
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience as working as a Senior Healthcare Assistant
- Clear understanding of professional accountability, delegation and professionalism related to the role of a band 3 worker.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in working in a clinic environment
- Knowledge and understanding of the importance of aseptic technique when undertaking invasive procedures
- Knowledge of urological conditions and treatments
Skills

- IT skills
- Ability to maintain clear, concise and accurate clinical entries/written records
