Job overview

As our Pharmacy Technician, Area Prescribing & Formulary, you will:

  • Support high quality and cost-effective prescribing across Northamptonshire.
  • Monitor the use of high-cost medicines.
  • Provide oversight of the use of advanced Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM), insulin pumps and Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL) systems.
  • Facilitate the work programme of the Area Prescribing Committee.
  • Assist the maintenance of a single formulary for medicines across Northamptonshire.

Main duties of the job

As our Pharmacy Technician, Area Prescribing and Formulary, you will play a crucial role in the maintenance of a systemwide medicines formulary and support the delivery of high-quality patient care via cost-effective, evidence-based utilisation of high-cost medicines and diabetes care systems. The post holder will directly support clinicians and clinical teams in the deliver best value medicines use. As such, the position requires clinical and collaborative skill to optimise medicines management and improve patient outcomes. Working with multidisciplinary teams, you will focus on optimising medicines use through policies, guidelines and protocols and robust formulary management.

The Medicines Optimisation Team are a collaborative ICB team, based at Haylock House in Kettering, but working in a hybrid way. We contribute to services across the health economy and through delivery of the Integrated Care Northamptonshire (ICN) 10-year strategy, support people in Northamptonshire to live their best lives, with a focus on getting the most from the use of medicines. You will play a key part in ensuring best value from medicines and diabetes care systems and as such you will become a key member of the MO team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    Responsibilities

  • Be a named contact for the Blueteq system, supporting system development.
  • Accurately collect data and produce reports as required to a high standard in a timely manner. This includes the collection, tracking, validation and sharing of data.
  •  Support the annual budget setting process for high-cost medicines.
  • Support Trust compliance with requirements for high-cost medicines funding.
  • Communicate and implement policy, process and agreed prescribing changes, as efficiently as possible.
  • To work with clinicians and wider health community to identify areas where understanding and use of medicines can be improved, and medicines wastage minimised.
  • Support the Medicines Optimisation Team in development of medicines related initiatives within the ICB pertaining to formulary, high-cost medicines, and diabetes care systems.
  • Assist the finance team with medicines expenditure requests as required.
  • Undertake prescribing audits on behalf of the MOT.
  • Conduct regular reviews of prescribing patterns, identify opportunities to improve cost-effectiveness.
  • Retrieve, analyse, interpret, and present prescribing and clinical data to allow a decision about drug therapy to be made by the clinician.
  • Provide support, education, and training to pharmacy staff as required e.g. formulary processes, use of Blueteq system.
  • Support Advanced Pharmacist., Area Prescribing and Formulary with initiatives to facilitate high-quality cost-effective prescribing across Northamptonshire.
  • Act on own professional judgment under the guidance of Medicines Optimisation Team members and work on own initiative within professional boundaries and within national protocols and legislation.
  • Work to agreed timescales under remote or direct supervision with high levels of accuracy.
  • Work effectively and flexibly as part of the Medicines Optimisation Team.
  • Work on individual projects relating to prescribing as required.

  • Pharmacy Technician registered with GPhC

Experience
