Job overview

The post is based at Kettering general hospital although cross-site working is encouraged as a part of university hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN).

 

The post holder will join an established cohesive team of radiologists supporting clinicians and delivering acute and elective imaging in both specialist areas and in general radiology. The post/s have developed to complement the existing expertise within the department and to manage expanding demands for imaging from the Emergency department, Cancer services, as well as the general diagnostic imaging workload. 

Main duties of the job

This post/s would support emergency radiology, cancer imaging reporting, attending multi-disciplinary team meetings, and covering Ultrasound (if appropriate), CT and MR session in the working week.

This role includes all aspects of a radiologist role, including but not limited to vetting, reporting, MDT preparation (specific to the sub-specialty), duty (hot reporting /CT/MRI and emergency service) and on call.

  • To provide support cross-site to cover any gaps across UHN when necessary.
  • Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues, other departments, and primary care.
  • Offer educational, clinical support and leadership and junior medical colleagues, radiology colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ensure appropriate information is made available to staff to measure clinical performance and enable meaningful benchmarks to be established and evaluated within your area of responsibility.
  • Provide a role model of professional leadership, which underpins the corporate values and behaviours agreed by the organisation, ensuring these are understood and demonstrated by the medical workforce within your area and take remedial action where poor behaviour are demonstrated.
  • Ensure that junior doctors training conforms to royal college of radiology requirements.
  • Participate in the appraisal of medical staff within the department in line with the trust's agreed policy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Role specific

·         The work programme and job plan will be agreed on appointment. It is a full-time appointment. As a minimum it will be examined yearly during job planning. It will include a minimum of 1.5 SPA (Supporting professional activities) and rest DCC (Direct Clinical care activities). Distinct roles with other NHS responsibilities will attract further PA.

·          Remote working is supported as part of the Job plan within the Trust and EMRAD consortium. Remote workstations can be provided (subject to availability).

·         The job plan will be subject to review, with any revisions sought by mutual agreement but it is expected that the successful candidate will work with the Clinical business unit management team across UHN to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match.

·         There is on-call commitment, included in the weekly timetable. The rota is 1 in 14, which will be one weekday between 5pm-8pm, and split weekends (10am-4pm). Currently, 1 PA is given for on-call.

·         There are opportunities for modality leads, speciality leads, audit and clinical governance lead and teaching/training leads etc.

·          Provide cover for consultant colleagues during periods of annual leave (if applicable).

·         Participate in the weekly MDTs and other departmental meetings and activities, providing cover for colleagues at specialist MDTs as required.

·         Provide prompt effective advice for General Practitioners and Hospital Doctors, and also vetting requests appropriately during the Duty session.

·         Teaching and Training overview: All Consultants are expected to contribute to teaching and training of undergraduate students and postgraduate trainees as part of their role. Consultants will normally have undergraduate medical students placed with them during clinical duties and are expected to teach alongside clinical service work. Similarly, Consultants will normally be involved in clinical supervision of postgraduate trainees.

·         Some Consultants will choose to take on additional undergraduate and/or postgraduate education and training responsibilities. Enhanced undergraduate duties will include acting as examiners in medical school assessments, providing occasional seminar and small group teaching, lecturing & other Phase 1 teaching within the medical curricula, in addition to individual supervision of clinical students attached to them. Enhanced postgraduate duties will include acting as clinical supervisor and educational supervisor for radiology specialist registrars from UHL, Foundation or Specialty trainee.

·         Strong emphasis is placed on participation in the general training, audit activities and in the teaching of medical students and radiographers. There are varying degrees of research activities in clinical departments, where radiologist’s input may be needed. Research opportunities have increased since gaining university hospital status. 

All consultants will undergo appraisal and revalidation, comply with the terms and conditions of the organization, and ensure their statutory and mandatory training is current and compliant.

Essential criteria
  • FRCR
  • Certificate of Specialist Training in Radiology (or be within 6 months of its award at time of Advisory Appointment Committee).
  • At least 2 years of working in radiology in NHS
  • Extensive experience in general radiology including plain film interpretation, ultrasound, CT, fluoroscopy and MRI
  • Competency in specific subspecialty reporting for MDT meetings
  • Competency in intervention related to sub-specialty
  • Interest in teaching medical undergraduates, radiology and non-radiology junior medical staff and other healthcare professionals.
Desirable criteria
  • Additional undergraduate or postgraduate qualification.
  • Management and Leadership experience
