Job overview

Head & Neck division has an exciting opportunity to join the Head and Neck Oncology CNS  team.  The role includes supporting patients with Head and Neck (ENT & Maxillofacial) and Thyroid cancer patients from  diagnosis, through  treatment and follow up or palliative / end of life care.

The post holder will work along side senior Head & Neck CNS and an oncology support worker.

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist nursing care in maintaining and developing a quality service for H&N cancer patients

To take the key worker responsibility for a caseload of patients requiring specialist nursing care.

To provide specialist training as required to support staff, ensuring the provision of high quality care in the most efficient and safe manner in accordance with Directorate and Hospital policies and procedures

To support band 7 CNS in setting up nurse led clinics and in service improvement and in the smooth running of the service

To support  patients and families affected by H&N Cancer

To work closely with other health care providers including wider oncology, District Nurses, GPs, Palliative team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work and support with ENT, Maxillofacial and Thyroid cancer patients.

To provide a quality service for H&N cancer patients

To take the key worker responsibility for a caseload of patients requiring specialist nursing care and support.

To provide support to other staff in clinic or ward, ensuring the provision of high quality care in the most efficient and safe manner in accordance with Directorate and Hospital policies and procedures

To support band 7 CNS in setting up nurse led clinics , service improvement, conducting surveys, contributing to annual report and in the smooth running of the service

To support  patients and families affected by H&N Cancer

To work closely with other health care providers including wider oncology, District Nurses, GPs, Palliative team.

Post holder will be expected to see patients in clinic, ward and occasionally may require home visit.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with or caring for Cancer patients.
  • Experience of Hospital IT systems.
Desirable criteria
  • Head and neck relevant experience
  • Experience in running nurse led clinics

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Able to convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to patients, carers and staff
Desirable criteria
  • Working with oncology patients

planning and organisational skills

Essential criteria
  • Acts on own initiative and problem solves
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of national policy and current issues affecting management and treatment for patients with Head and Neck Cancer.
