Main duties of the job

Key Duties

  • Provide visionary leadership, managing and inspiring teams within the Blood Sciences Service.
  • Drive operational excellence, ensuring high-quality, efficient, and effective service delivery.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders to shape the strategic direction of pathology services.
  • Champion the professional development of Biomedical Scientists and support staff, fostering growth and innovation.

Person specification

Training & Qualification

Essential criteria
  • MSc. or equivalent Postgraduate qualification in a healthcare subject, or equivalent experience in a Health Service setting
  • State Registered BMS (HCPC)
  • Recognised management qualification at postgraduate diploma level or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate qualification ideally in specialism
  • Evidence of higher specialist training gained through short courses or distance learning
  • Project / Programme management training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of managing and leading a large and complex service department, with a significant number of line reports. (As a guide it would be anticipated that this would usually require 3 years’ experience in a senior management role to develop the level of leadership required)
  • Demonstrate a high level of leadership and organisational skills, including the introduction of innovative technology and giving a major contribution to the strategic direction of the service.
  • Evidence of effective change management & business planning
  • Awareness of national and local NHS agendas
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a teaching hospital or other busy environment
  • Experience of NHS financial and administrative systems
  • Awareness of national pathology agendas
