We are looking to appoint enthusiastic, committed, apprentice biomedical scientists to join us in providing a first rate Biochemistry service at NUH. We are seeking good team players who will work in the Biochemistry section of Clinical Pathology contributing to its on-going strategic development. A commitment to continuing education and training is fundamental. A meticulous and conscientious approach is required. Successful candidates will demonstrate good interpersonal skill through the ability to communicate clearly and have the ability to analyse facts and situations in order to make appropriate assessments.

As an Apprentice Biomedical Scientist, the post holder will be a member of the departmental team and assist in the delivery of a quality driven, cost effective, patient focused service consistent with the Nottingham University Hospitals Trust’s objectives. To provide that service in a manner commensurate with the profession. This post involves working towards HCPC registration as a biomedical scientist. This role involves both academic study at Nottingham Trent University and Laboratory training at Nottingham University Hospitals.

The post holders’ main role is to assist in the examination of pathological samples using various technologies and to present the results as appropriate.

 The post holder will be required to work at both NCH and QMC campuses and will be required to participate in the out of hours roster, covering a 24/7 service from year two onwards.

NUH NHS Trust is a large, teaching hospital comprising two sites, the Queens Medical Centre and the City Hospital. QMC provides acute services supporting a busy emergency service and trauma centre. City Hospital departments include Clinical Haematology, Oncology, Transplantation and Cardiac services. Biomedical Scientists work in laboratories at both sites on a rotational basis. The Biochemistry team contributes to the development of laboratory services which are patient focussed. These include both 24/7 acute, highly automated functions and specialist services embracing Trisomy Screening, Myeloma monitoring, Inborn Errors of Metabolism investigation and Immunosuppressant drug monitoring. The Biochemistry laboratory is an IBMS accredited training provider.

Under the direction of senior Biomedical Scientist staff to:

Assist with all laboratory analyses associated with the post, maintaining analysers, appropriate records and documentation.

Participate in the department’s 24/7 rosters as required (2nd year onwards).

Undertake quality control procedures, examine quality control results to identify poor performance and instigate appropriate action.

Participate in the operation and routine maintenance of equipment.

Ensure that personal work activity is managed to make effective use of time and maintain an adequate supply of laboratory consumables, reagents and equipment.

Ensure the competent and efficient use of computerised data management systems.

Participate in the department’s training plan and all the NTU course requirements (lectures, practical sessions, exams, coursework). The expectation is 100% attendance at NTU for lectures and laboratory sessions.

Maintain ongoing NUH & NTU training records, gathering evidence and working towards completion of the IBMS Certificate of Competence (assessed in 4th year).

Assist with the development of new methods and the implementation of new technology.

Maintain standards of laboratory policies and procedures to ensure that the department meets National External Quality Assurance and Accreditation standards.

Assist with the production, maintenance and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures.

Ensure that safe working practices are followed in accordance with departmental Safety Policy.

Be aware of and adhere to Trusts policies, including those relating to discipline, grievance, sickness, absence and health and safety.

Ensure compliance with all statutory and legislative requirements including patient confidentiality and the Data Protection Act.

Work flexibly and undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as required.

Participate in and contribute to own Personal Development Review.

  • A Levels - BBB, including Biology; or BTEC Extended Diploma - DDM, including relevant Biology modules; Or 120 UCAS Tariff points from three A Levels or equivalent qualifications, including an A Level grade B equivalent in Biology
  • GCSEs - English and Maths grade C/4.

  • Level 1 or level 2 IBMS Certificate of Achievement
