This position will promote the well-being of staff in Maternity, Neonatal and connected services. It requires an experienced Clinical Psychologist with a strong background in trauma-informed care and staff well-being. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping a supportive and resilient work environment within Maternity and Neonatal Services across the Trust.
The post-holders will maintain a strong physical presence within the relevant departments with a particular focus on areas where provision of psychological support for staff is most lacking and most needed. This will require building positive relationships with stakeholders, developing an understanding of the complex needs of the service and staff.
Maternity and Neonatal services at NUH have been under external review of both historic and prospective care. This has led to engagement with both media and legal systems. This is a unique situation that requires a skilled Consultant Clinical Psychologist to develop plans of care for universal, targeted and specialist support across the relevant staff populations. The post holders will be responsible for developing and delivering a psychological support system to staff working within maternity, neonatal and connected services that are impacted by the current reviews.
The post-holder will be based at both the QMC and City Hospital campuses
Main duties of the job
Conduct a comprehensive systematic assessment of the psychological needs of the staff population.
Lead on the development of Clinical Psychology services to staff under external review in Maternity and Neonatal services, interpreting national guidelines and local policy as they apply to the multiple complex and systemic presentations.
Be co-responsible for long-term planning and strategy for the development of services to support staff impacted by external review in Maternity and Neonatal Care
Be accountable for their own professional actions as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist for the service.
Provide supervision to Clinical Psychologists and other professional groups as appropriate/required.
Contribute to the training of staff as required.
Undertake personal R&D programmes and contribute to the organisation of R&D activities of Assistant/Trainee Psychologists on placement.
Participate in clinical governance for the Department of Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology to ensure department-wide clinical governance compliance as agreed with Head of Service.
Have a regular physical presence for staff in the Maternity and related departments at both QMC and City campuses.
Assist as appropriate in the event of a Major Incident.

Training and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Eligibility for Chartered Clinical Psychology status and registration as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health & Care Professions Council
- Postgraduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology
Desirable criteria
- Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice and supervision.
- Additional study/qualifications in a relevant area of clinical psychology
- Specialist knowledge, experience and/or training relating to evidence-based interventions for staff who are under stress
- Formal leadership training
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial post qualification experience working in a clinical medical/health psychology setting
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across a range of care settings including outpatient and inpatient. Including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
- Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care coordinator and also within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan
- Extensive experience of facilitating spaces for staff reflection
- Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision to unqualified clinical psychologists and other professional groups
- Extensive post-qualification clinical experience of working with staff in healthcare systems
- Experience of developing a 'case of need' to support psychological needs of health systems

Essential criteria
- A high level ability to communicate effectively at both a written and oral level complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS.
- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
- Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
- Ability to contain and work with organisational stress and ability to ‘hold’ the stress of others.
- Ability to identify provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours.
Desirable criteria
- The ability to work effectively with clients from a diverse range of cultural/ethnic backgrounds, and to understand and respect the impact of difference and diversity upon clients’ lives and difficulties.
Analytical and Judgement skills
Essential criteria
- A doctoral level of research knowledge. The ability to lead on both clinical and non-clinical research, applying a doctoral level of knowledge and skills in research designs, methods and analyses (including complex multivariate statistics) as practised in the field of clinical psychology.
- Evidence of highest level of analytical and judgemental skills
- Ability to analyse highly complex psychological data in order to develop individual psychological formulations
- Ability to identify, and employ, as appropriate, clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour
- Good judgement about when to act to ensure safety
- Ability to continue to think clearly in situations of high emotion and stress

- Record of having published in either peer reviewed or academic or professional journals and/or books
Physical Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to move between locations across the Trust in a working day
- To work across both City and QMC campuses as required
Planning and organisational skills

- Evidence of highly advanced planning and organisational skills.
- Post-qualification experience of service development and planning

- Experience of project management and structured service improvements, such as QI

- Enhanced DBS check clearance required
- Up to date immunisations are required (including TB and HepB)
- Ability to work with individuals who often have complex emotional and physical difficulties, are highly distressed and can be verbally and physically aggressive. This may include end of life care
