Assistant Psychologist (Burns)

Job overview

We are pleased to advertise the position of Assistant Psychologist to the Burns Team, this is a 0.6wte permanent position.

The successful applicant will work within a multidisciplinary team  in a busy regional burns service which cares for both inpatients and outpatients who have experienced burn injuries. The role will involve primarily inpatient work with both adults and children/families. The role will focus on meeting the National Burn Care Standard of screening patients/families prior to discharge from hospital. This is a well-established post and we have an excellent record of previous postholder’s progressing to clinical psychology training. The post holder  will be based across both the City Hospital and the QMC Campus. The post involves on-site working on the hospital wards and remote working is not possible.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated psychology graduate who has an interest in a career in Clinical Psychology and in developing skills and experience in the area of Clinical Health Psychology. Specifically, in the field of burn injuries. Applicants should have a Psychology degree (2.1 or higher) and previous relevant experience. They must be able to appreciate the role of Clinical Psychology in a medical setting for patients with physical health problems and have the personal qualities and capabilities to be able to work on an inpatient medical ward within the hospital with patients with visible physical injuries (burns wounds).

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be welcomed to the Department of Clinical Psychology & Neuropsychology within the trust. Currently there are over 30 clinical psychologists, and assistant and trainee clinical psychologists working across a number of medical inpatient and outpatient services within the Trust including: Adult and Paediatric Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Neurorehabilitation Services, Stroke, NPH, Paediatrics, Burns, Cystic Fibrosis, Oncology, Cleft Lip and Palate, Major Trauma, Intensive Care, Renal and Haematology. We have excellent links with the University of Nottingham and regional Clinical Psychology Doctorate Courses.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working as an Assistant Psychologist, or in a similar/equivalent role which involves direct clinical contact with people with psychological difficulties
  • Awareness of the types of psychological problems that adults or children/their families may experience following burn injuries
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with patients with physical health problems
  • Experience of working with patients with physical injuries/wounds
  • Experience of working with patients with visible differences
  • Experience of conducting clinical audits and/or research

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Psychology (upper second class or above).
  • Eligible for Graduate Membership of the British Psychological Society.
  • Enthusiasm for any training required
Desirable criteria
  • Training in topics related to mental health, psychological difficulties or psychological therapies.

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to build positive relationships with colleagues and patients.
  • Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and build positive relationships with patients with physical injuries and visible differences
  • Ability to describe psychological concepts in a manner that is accessible to patients and staff with little or no psychological understanding
  • Ability to use clinical supervision appropriately
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Desirable criteria
  • Understand the importance and function of supervision.
  • Experience in building relationships with people who have visible differences

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to correctly administer, score and interpret psychometric tests
  • Ability to work with autonomy but within level of competence.
  • Competence in the statistical package SPSS
  • Ability to develop, manage and analyse large data sets

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to be highly organised and prioritise workload.
  • Have flexibility in approach to work.
  • Have a proactive approach to managing difficulties that may arise in the role.

Physical skills

  • Ability to move between a number of locations within the region in a working day

Essential criteria
  • Competence in IT systems including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent telephone manner
  • Ability to travel between the City Campus and the QMC Campus and any other relevant sites
  • Up to date immunisations (including TB, HepB)
  • Ability to work on days to suit the service (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays)
