Chief Registrar, Adult Critical Care

NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Registrar

Job overview

The chief registrar role is a leadership role for senior specialty trainees. The role provides 40% protected time to develop and implement local initiatives focusing on, for example, service improvement, engagement and morale, education and training, workforce and sustainability.
Previous Chief Registrars at NUH have become fully integrated into the
medical and educational leadership at the Trust, been a key link between
junior doctors and senior leaders, led divisional level quality improvement
projects and been welcomed to Trust and divisional meetings.
Chief registrars benefit from access to a bespoke development programme provided by the RCP, and comprises five 2-day modules that chief registrars are expected to attend.

Main duties of the job

The chief registrar role may be undertaken in programme or out of
programme. There are various options including less than full time training, OOPT, OOPE and OOPP. We will work with you to find the working and training arrangements that suit you and your department best. Any necessary extension to certificate of completion of training (CCT) date is also negotiated and approved locally, with involvement of the Head of School where appropriate. Approval of the relevant specialist advisory committee will be required for OOP requests.
Trainees must discuss applications for chief registrar roles with their
education supervisor and TPD in advance of applying. Permission to apply for the role must be obtained from the TPD.
You will be based at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Working for our organisation

Adult Critical Care at NUH is a highly supportive, friendly, cohesive, ambitious and energetic team led by a group of consultants devoted to delivering excellent care to our patients. We invest in every member of team, are positive about well-being and have an accommodating approach to the rota. There are an abundance of educational opportunities and on-site is the well regarded Trent Simulation Centre. Our juniors consistently secure their preferred training posts through competitive selection.

Our 66 critical care beds are split between the Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital, admitting in excess of 4500 patients per year. We accept patients from all of the major medical and surgical specialties and are a tertiary referral centre for many subspecialties. Of note we are a neurosurgical centre, burns centre and are one of the busiest major trauma centres in Europe. Among our staff are the National Lead for Organ Donation and the Vice Chair of NIHR’s Critical Care Group.
