Job overview

The post would be ideal for either a post IMT3-ST4 or a mid-scheme ST5-6, an experienced SHO or Specialist Registrar, who has a clinical background involving Dermatology. The successful applicant would also have an interest in medical education and educational research.

This is a post based in Dermatology at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH), Queen’s Medical Centre Campus (QMC). It will offer a unique combination of teaching and clinical opportunities within QMC. It will involve taking a lead role in the organisation, development and delivery of clinical teaching and tutorials to medical students based at NUH, both within the clinical workplace and in a teaching/skills environment. 

Personal teaching skills will be developed and improved, along with understanding and experience of experiential learning, competency assessment and evaluation tools. There will also be the opportunity to develop skills and experience in non-technical areas such as communication and de/briefing working alongside experienced faculty members UMED.

The post holder can undertake the taught M.Med.Sci (Clin.Ed) Course as a part time postgraduate student, which constitutes approximately 20 days contact time at the University of Nottingham or at another Higher Education Institution as applicable, plus reading and writing up of assignments and dissertation.  50% of the costs of the M Med Sci will need to be met by the successful applicant and 50% by the Trust for all UK applicants.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Commitments 

Clinical commitments will be arranged depending on the applicant’s ability and competence. Clinical experience will be established through the application process and interview. Clinical sessions will make up 50% of the job and include clinics, skin biopsy/surgery lists and acute dermatology (9am-5pm). The teaching fellow will be supervised by a consultant. There are opportunities to take part in clinical audit, quality improvement projects and research, which may lead to presentations and publications

Undergraduate Medical Teaching 

The post holder will be responsible for the development and teaching to the Foundation for Practice Students (FFP) Dermatology medical students as they rotate through their placement at QMC. They will also have input alongside other Teaching Fellows into the Year 1 & 2 Early Clinical Experience Course and support other MACCS assessments and patient workshops within NUH.  Responsibility for the following:

·           Organisation of a programme of learning over 12 months

·           Deliver induction, tutorials and practical skills sessions for medical students

·           Improve and develop teaching material to enhance the learning experience for students

·           Organising and conducting formative assessments

·           Contributing questions for online summative assessment. 

·           Collating and disseminating feedback and updating the course/curriculum

·           To establish case histories available for tutorial discussions and develop self-directed             learning materials.

·           Maintain key working relationships with clinical staff, administrative staff, academic staff, clinical directors in Dermatology Module and the undergraduate co-ordinator at QMC.

·           Support all areas of the clinical course, especially when the Dermatology teaching is not running, this includes bedside teaching and support, workshops, teaching fellow meetings and other initiatives

·         Providing intensive coaching for Dermatology re-sit and other clinical students

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GMC Full registration MBBS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Distinction, prizes or honours during Undergraduate and Postgraduate training MRCP

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Satisfactory completion of clinical training attachments in Foundation training, or equivalent experience Minimum 6 months NHS experience
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical experience in Dermatology as a doctor

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Enthusiastic and experienced in teaching clinical skills in the workplace or training environment to junior staff and students
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching to multidisciplinary groups Has successfully completed formal teaching course such as ‘training the trainers’ or ‘teaching skills’ course Presentations at local/regional/national/international meetings

Research & Audit

  • Evidence of active participation and completion of an audit project or quality improvement project
