This full-time SAS post consisting entirely of laboratory responsibilities, providing diagnostic expertise within the Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS) at Nottingham City Hospital. The post-holder will join an enthusiastic team of Haematopathologists and clinical scientists, supporting HMDN's expansion to provide a fully integrated regional service.

HMDN (Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service, Nottingham) was  established in 2016 to provide integrated bone marrow and wider haematological malignancy reporting for Nottingham, United Lincolnshire, Sherwood Forest, and Derby Hospitals. The service includes lymph node and bone marrow biopsy reporting, flow cytometry, and genomic interpretation, with close collaboration with local and regional genomics labs. This post is part of the final phase of HMDN's expansion to a fully regional service.

Key responsibilities of the post include reporting bone marrow aspirates, trephines, and flow cytometry as  well as contributing to lymph node biopsy reporting, and collaboration with scientific staff to triage bone marrow samples and oversee test ordering as part of integrated reporting. Developing a specialist interest in diagnostic areas, teaching, or research is encouraged.

HMDN holds weekly meetings with the local Clinical Haematology team, contributes regionally to disease-specific MDTs, and provides training for haematology and histopathology trainees. 

Main duties of the job

The appointee will collaborate with consultants to fulfil duties outlined in the Job Plan.

Main Clinical Activities:

• Reporting bone marrow aspirates, flow cytometry, trephines, and lymph nodes
• Screening samples and ordering add-on tests
• Liaison with laboratory services and clinicians
• MDT attendance

Educational and Other Activities:
The appointee will train Resident doctors in Cellular Pathology and Haematology, contribute to teaching programs, and assist with policies, SOPs, audits, and educational materials. Participation in NEQAS programs, UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation, and teaching healthcare staff is required. Research opportunities in departmental projects are encouraged.

Managerial Responsibilities:
The appointee will work with Biomedical Scientists and administration to ensure efficient Haematopathology services, assist with asset management, and support business planning including the introduction of new laboratory methods. Attendance at meetings and involvement in governance, audit, and training are required.

Service Development Opportunities:
Involvement in laboratory management, new methods, and cancer network meetings.

Revalidation and Clinical Governance:
The appointee must engage in appraisal, CPD, and quality improvement following GMC guidelines and Trust policies, participating in audits and incident reporting.

Research
Opportunities exist in Trust and University of Nottingham projects.

Additional roles may be agreed with the Trust.
