Main duties of the job

Day-to-day, you’ll run a mixed case load of inquests, claims and general advice matters. You will provide timely advice on legal matters to staff across the Trust, in all Divisions and to the Board. Work will cover a range of things including any issues that arise on inquest and claims matters and any general advice queries which often touch upon consent, safeguarding, behavioural issues, and medical treatment decisions. You will be responsible for the supervision of more junior team members.
You will be involved in making positive changes to Trust processes and guidance and sharing learning and themes from claims and inquests in order to support the Trust’s drive for quality and to improve patient safety.

A dynamic and experienced lawyer or paralegal you will be looking to take your next step in your legal career. This is a fast-paced and dynamic role, no two days are the same.
You’ll have a background of being a good litigator, with inquest experience or general advocacy experience. You will understand the importance of hitting deadlines, of following process, of running a case load properly but also be empathetic, kind and supportive. Person specification
Training and Qualification
Essential criteria
- Law Degree
- CILEx Associate or Graduate (or equivalent) member or Law Degree or 3 years relevant experience assisting in the management or personal injury claims and/ or clinical negligence claims/ inquests is desirable
Experience
Essential criteria
- Proven track record of managing a substantial caseload of NHS legal claims, including high value clinical negligence claims and complex cororoner's inquests for a minimum of 3 years
- Demonstrate experience of advising at senior level on range of health law issues that arise in an acute NHS setting
- Demonstrate experience of supervision of junior team members
Communication and Relationship
Essential criteria
- Extensive experience of conducting difficult meetings involving clinical and professional staff on legal issues affecting them
- Experience of working with and effectively communicating with a range of external stakeholders inc NHSR, solicitors, Coroner, Police
Analytical and Judgement
Essential criteria
- Work independently with minimum supervision
- Analyse a wide range of complex information and decide on appropriate claims manage of a claim
Planning and organisation
Essential criteria
- Working to deadlines and under pressure, adapting to changing requirements and unpredictable nature of the job. Must be able to adjust priorities accordingly
