Homebirth Midwife

Do you have a passion for supporting physiological birth? Do you want to provide unhurried, person-centred care in the home? Do you have the expertise to provide high quality, safe care?

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic band 6 midwife to support our homebirth service for a 1 year period. The role will be to become part of a friendly, dedicated homebirth team, providing care in the home through the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period.  You will hold a caseload of women for whom you will be the named midwife throughout the antenatal and postnatal period. We need individuals with a passion for individualised care and supporting choice. You will have excellent communication skills to enable the planning and implementation of individualised midwifery led care in partnership with the wider multidisciplinary team. As a successful post holder, you will be required to continually provide holistic risk assessments for those choosing to birth at home, to ensure their medical, psychological and social needs are met.

This dedicated homebirth team provides 24/7 cover by undertaking a mixture of day and night shifts to enable us to operate a full homebirth service. Before commencing in post, you will be supported by experienced midwives with an orientation package that is bespoke to your individual needs. You must have the flexibility provide care in the home setting. A full driving licence is required with access to a car.

  • To actively contribute to the reduction in health inequalities by supporting a service that is accessible to all
  • To effectively manage all aspects of the care provided within the community setting, including intrapartum care at home

  • To maintain an up to date knowledge of current research and trends in midwifery care, contribute to the development and delivery of evidence based practices, policies and guidelines for maternity services
  • To empower women/birthing people to make an informed choice and act as their advocate at all times.
  • To improve experiences of childbirth by offering a choice of place of birth and working in partnership with families when making decisions about care. 
  • To work in partnership with medical teams, offering coordinated packages of care making referrals as appropriate
  • To promote health and social well-being, contributing to the reduction in health inequality
  • To ensure the safety and confidentiality of patients and ensure their records are maintained in accordance with Trust Policies
  • To participate in parenting assessments/education
  • To maintain effective working relationships across the Trust
  • To offer models of care personalised to individual needs, acknowledging diversity of the client groups and treating everyone with dignity and respect
  • To support and encourage women/birthing people to achieve good clinical and psychological outcomes for themselves and their babies
  • To identify families with child in need/child protection issues and effectively communicate to the manager and named midwife for safeguarding
  • To develop midwifery practice for the future, redefining the role and building on public health skills to maximise the impact on reducing inequalities in health
  • To work in partnership with children centres and other agencies, offering wider choice and local access to services
  • To manage effectively all aspects of their caseload and administration
  • To effectively communicate complicated and sensitive information to women, their families and members of a multi-disciplinary team
  • To ensure changes are implemented based on feedback and learning lessons from feedback from women and incidents
  • To contribute to the performance management of midwifery services through data collection for audit and research purpose
