Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Oncology and Haematology

Nottingham is the Primary Treatment Centre for the East Midlands (population 4.5 million) and treats 120 new patients with malignant disease a year. The department has 17 designated in-patient beds including a 5 bedded TYA unit, 3 day-care beds and access to beds on the neuro-sciences ward.

This is a varied and interesting post in paediatric oncology and haematology. Experience will be provided at Nottingham Children's Hospital (Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust) in general paediatric oncology, paediatric neuro-oncology, paediatric haematology, TYA oncology, neuro-rehabilitation and clinical trials.

The successful applicant will work alongside 4 other middle grade doctors (one paediatric trainee, one haematology trainee and two other clinical fellows.  We have one ST2 paediatric trainee and one foundation doctor. 

The senior medical staff consists of two paediatric haematology consultants, and five paediatric oncology consultants (two academic appointments). The department has two clinical nurse specialists who coordinate planning for children on treatment, three oncology pharmacists, and three paediatric oncology outreach nurses. The team works closely with psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, community paediatric nurses and other medical specialties.

We pride ourselves on being a friendly and supportive team and enjoy the benefits of seeing the perspective of clinical fellows with experience of treatment at other centres and in different countries.  We have supported some previous post-holder through achieving membership and applying for training posts.  There is access to a shared doctors/nurses office on the ward and a shared registrar room and paediatric mess serving the Children's Hospital.  Nottingham is a lovely vibrant city with excellent transport links to the hospital and affordable accommodation.  Beautiful countryside is only 30 mins away.

The successful applicant will rotate through three different clinical areas: oncology and haematology inpatients (including neuro-oncology, leukaemia and non-malignant haematology), day care and outpatients. Trainee supervision includes twice weekly consultant-led ward rounds; solid tumour, neuro-oncology, haematology, psychosocial, neuro-rehabilitation and TYA MDTs; an ‘attending consultant’ system for in-patient care and new patient referrals; and a weekly supervised chemotherapy prescribing session. Induction includes supervision in bone marrow sampling, safe chemotherapy prescribing and handling and accredited training in prescription and administration of intrathecal chemotherapy. Out-patient clinics include general and neuro-oncology, leukaemia, non-malignant haematology, combined neuro-oncology / endocrine and neuro-oncology / ophthalmology and late effects / long term follow up. Depending on experience and training the successful applicant will be expected to run their own outpatient clinics with consultant supervision. Occasional participation at regional shared care clinics is encouraged.

There is no out of hours commitment with this post however there may be opportunity for the appointee to undertake locum general paediatric on call within Nottingham Children’s hospital if they wished to do so. Experienced applicants may also have the opportunity to undertake weekend day-time on call work with consultant supervision if they wish to increase their “out of hours” experience prior to consultancy.
