12 month secondment or fixed term opportunity - 18.75 hours per week
The successful applicant will work within the Physiotherapy departments at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and will be integral to the Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) consultant team. They will provide expert specialist rehabilitation for those patients on the SEM pathway and support the training and mentorship of rotational staff within the physiotherapy team. Many patients who are referred by SEM consultants have had physiotherapy before; hence complex clinical decision-making and optimal treatment delivery is required to reach satisfactory outcomes in this patient cohort. A number of out of area referrals are also seen and this role will also support and build regional networks to enhance treatment closer to home for patients. Clinical delivery will take place across a number of NUH sites to include Queens, City campuses and the National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM, Loughborough). The job plan will consist of: clinics alongside the SEM consultants (for one stop shop advice and treatment), physiotherapy-led clinics for rehabilitation and a number of sessions to support service improvement, project work, education and research.
Main duties of the job
Support consultant led clinics – assess and advise complex patients and provide specialist rehabilitation opinion to the MDT
Assess and rehabilitate complex MSK patients at Queens and City campuses and NCSEM Loughborough
Project / Service improvement tasks as per current SEM objectives
Line management for Band 6 and other therapy staff
Teaching / training MSK skills
Supporting / developing regional SEM networks to support care closer to home
Clinical audit and research translation
SEM service evaluation and innovation
To support the out of hours / weekend service for Trauma and Orthopaedics (full training and support available)

Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- HCPC Physiotherapist
- BSc Hons Physiotherapy
- • A range of recognised post-graduate training relevant to area of practice, preferably including research skills to a Master’s level.
Desirable criteria
- Member of Special Interest Group
Experience
Essential criteria
- • Require highly advanced theoretical / practical knowledge and clinical reasoning skills
- • Experience of managing highly complex clinical cases
- • Experience of working with and leading a team of registered and unregistered AHP staff
Desirable criteria
- Experience of involvement in profession at a regional or national level
Communication & Relationship Skills
Essential criteria
- • Able to communicate highly complex information which may be sensitive or contentious to all concerned where there may be barriers to understanding e.g. psychosocial issues language barriers, speech problems, learning difficulties or where English is not the first language.
- • Ability to communicate and present highly complex information effectively, in written and verbal formats to individuals or groups of more than 20 people
- • Able to influence Senior medical consultants, GP’s and Commissioners
Analytical & Judgement Skills
Essential criteria
- • Ability to provide an expert ‘second opinion’ to patients with highly complex presentations.
- • Ability to critically appraise research literature and together with the team, implement evidence based practice in order to deliver an effective service.
- • Provide critical evaluation of service delivery and facilitate necessary change
Planning & Organisational Skills
Essential criteria
- • To contribute to the overall service delivery with the multidisciplinary and senior leadership team within relevant service at directorate level.
- • To develop the physiotherapy contribution to relevant service in relation to Trust objectives and national guidelines.
