Senior Clinical Technologist

We are seeking to appoint an experienced and well-motivated individual to the role of a Band 6 Clinical Technologist in the Radiation Physics Section of the Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering Department in Nottingham.

Radiation Physics is a highly specialised section within the department providing scientific and technical support to departments using ionising and non-ionising radiation both for treatment and diagnosis.

Applicants should be on the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT). For any applicants nearing the end of the IPEM Clinical Technologist training scheme appointment would initially be at Band 5 with an upgrade to Band 6 on successful completion of the scheme and entry onto the register.

The post-holder will provide technical services including quality assurance checks on diagnostic imaging equipment with an emphasis on CT, Interventional fluoroscopy and mammography testing. The appointee will participate in patient dosimetry programmes and will also be encouraged to take part in development work. 

In the course of their duties the post-holder will be required to work in close collaboration with colleagues, service engineers and customers from external organisations to whom we provide services.

This post, although based at Queens Medical Centre Campus, will involve significant travel to City Hospital Campus and our external customers in the region, thus a valid driving licence is essential.

1)    Clinical/scientific

a)    Participate in the routine testing of diagnostic X-ray equipment and ultrasound scanners used in the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and breast screening programmes.

b)    To organise own schedule of routine survey work to comply with Radiation Physics service contracts with customers. 

c)    Perform critical examination and commissioning of new, modified or repaired clinical equipment as required.

d)    Perform radiation safety and quality assurance surveys on more specialised equipment (eg. CT, Mammography, Radiotherapy Imaging), according to the post holder’s experience, expertise and the needs of the service. 

e)    Act as the quality assurance coordinator for specific customers who use X-ray imaging equipment and undertake annual audits of user QA.

f)    Produce performance reports for routine and ad hoc equipment testing and customer QA audits. Ensuring that all reports are issued in a timely manner following the check/audit.

g)    Communicate with clinical users to gain a clear understanding of the nature of problems with equipment and act on this information accordingly.

h)    Investigate faults, found at the survey or reported by the user, in order to inform maintenance engineers.

i)    Liaise with manufacturers’ engineers to obtain information e.g. equipment specifications, discuss equipment failure against expected performance standards and assist with any necessary remedial actions.

j)    Undertake cross-calibrations of Radiation Physics and service user’s QA meters and issue calibration certificates.

k)    Collaborate in the maintenance and development of the written procedures, work instructions and spreadsheets relevant to the post-holders areas of work, in accordance with the ISO9001:2015 management standard held by Radiation Physics.

2)    Research & Development

a)    Undertake research projects as and when required to address issues arising from routine section activities.

b)    Support and contribute to clinical research and trials.

3)    Policy and service development

a)    Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the work of the section.

b)    Assist in the identification, promotion and implementation of service developments both within the section and external customers supported by the section.

4)    Teaching & Training

a)    Support the practical training of other staff within Radiation Physics and trainee Clinical Scientists.

b)    Deliver user QA training to other staff groups e.g. radiographers, sonographers.

c)    Take responsibility for the work of more junior staff when they are performing tasks under the post holder’s direction. 

5)    Professional

a)    Maintain appropriate professional registration [RCT].

b)    Engage in appropriate continuing professional development, keeping abreast of relevant developments in own specialist area.

c)    Maintain an independent record of training to support CPD schemes

Training & Qualifications

  • BSc or Graduate Diploma (or equivalent) in Clinical Technology, Healthcare Science, Medical Physics (or similar).
  • Registration as a Clinical Technologist

Experience

  • Significant experience in the use of testing equipment employed to measure the safety and performance of medical imaging equipment.
  • Extensive experience of performing quality assurance measurements on interventional fluoroscopy, CT or mammography equipment.
  • Experience of working in a healthcare environment.

  • Experience of working within a Quality Management System such as ISO9001:2015.
