Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide oversight of the performance of R&I and ensure stretching targets are set and met each year including delivering financial sustainability.

Work closely with the Clinical Director(s) of Research and Innovation and SMT in setting standards and objectives for research. Provide support to SMT colleagues when there are challenges. 

Provide leadership for the development, delivery and performance management of our Research Strategy and the growth of the research portfolio. Ensure regular review and updating of plans.

Act as an ambassador for health and care research, internally (including for R&I at NUH Boards) and externally and represent the Trust at regional and national forums.

Be a visible leader and actively promote a culture of staff development, collaboration, positive staff experience, wellbeing and inclusion, embedding patient, carer and public involvement at all appropriate levels of decision making.

Work in close partnership with the Trust’s corporate teams to ensure R&I’s compliance with regulations, policies and standards.

Communicate the Trust’s research vision and plans to internal staff and external agencies, to raise the profile and highlight the benefits of research activity within the Trust.

Work with academic and commercial partners to allow increasing academic delivery across the Trust.

Person specification

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Professional knowledge acquired through degree, supplemented by specialist training to masters or equivalent level, management qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Must have significant evidenced continual professional development within the research environment.
  • Must have evidenced Prince 2 Project Management training or similar.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the key issues concerning clinical and research governance.
Desirable criteria
  • PhD, MD or equivalent research qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Strong experience of clinical trials management and related methodology.
  • Experience of representing patient and research interests at Regional and National levels.
  • A detailed understanding of research funding environment in the UK.
Desirable criteria
  • Formal qualification in leadership, preferably relevant to clinical research.
