Applications are invited for a full-time or less than full-time Consultant Medical Virologist or Consultant Clinical Scientist in Virology at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH).

This Consultant Virologist post is designed to support the provision of a high-quality infection management service at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH). The post holder will join a team of three Virology Consultants (two Consultants in Infectious Diseases and Virology and one Consultant Clinical Scientist) to deliver the Clinical Virology Service. 

Medical applicants will be required to have full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the GMC (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview). As well as the above, UK trained medical applicants should also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT. 

Consultant Clinical Scientist applicants must be registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), hold a PhD in a relevant  subject, and Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists by examination.

Applications for less than full-time working are invited and modification of the job content can be discussed on a personal basis with the Head of Service in consultation with Consultant colleagues.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the provision of a comprehensive clinical Virology service, including undertaking laboratory duties, results authorisation and interpretation, issuing advice on virological infection and the use of antiviral therapies, patient consults, ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs), infection prevention and control liaison, clinical governance, teaching and training. There are monthly Clinical Operations meetings within the Microbiology service, to which all consultant and senior laboratory staff are invited to attend and contribute. The laboratory works closely with the School of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham and there will be opportunities to develop research interests.

The Microbiology laboratory is a large NHS laboratory serving both NUH campuses, as well as Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust and The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Board with a total population of ~640,000.  The current service workload based on recent activity data is approximately 918,000 with 604,000 bacteriology and 314,000 virology/serology work types a year, two thirds of which is acute hospital diagnostic work and the remaining one third of the work is for general practitioners. The Clinical Virology team are integrated within the Clinical Microbiology Department and also work closely with the Infection Prevention and Control Team.

A large number of clinical specialties are provided at NUH, and the Clinical Virology service is actively involved in the management of Virological infections with regular ward rounds and liaison with specialist units such as Critical Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics (including a PICU and two large neonatal units), Clinical Haematology (including bone marrow transplantation and CAR T-Cell therapy), Oncology, Renal Dialysis, Renal Transplantation, Hepatology (including a regional hepatitis network), Infectious Diseases & Genito-Urinary Medicine (both providing HIV services).

Job description

The appointee, in collaboration with the other Consultants, will be expected to fulfil the following duties within the agreed Job Plan:

 

1.      To provide a comprehensive Virology service, including full clinical liaison, to:

a.      Clinical services within Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

b.      General Practitioners and other healthcare providers in the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System

c.      Other users of the Microbiology service as per Service Level Agreement

2.      To take a lead role in the development of clinical liaison with specialist clinical teams to meet the increasing demands of clinical users, including participation in guideline formulation and review.

3.      Share in the administrative duties associated with the running of a clinical laboratory.

4.      To participate as appropriate in day-to-day Infection Control activities for NUH and support the investigation and management of outbreaks of viral disease and liaison with advice to local CCDCs.

5.      To be involved in the collection and review of surveillance and epidemiological data in liaison with the NUH Infection Prevention and Control Team and UKHSA.

6.      To pursue research actively in medical virology and its associated epidemiology.

7.      To be involved in the training of specialty trainees, FY2s, scientific and senior scientist trainees.

8.      To pursue a programme of Continuous Professional Development (CPD), for example with the Royal College of Pathologists or the Royal College of Physicians, and to participate in annual Individual Performance Reviews (IPR) and Consultant appraisals. 

9.      Opportunities will be provided to contribute to the teaching of microbiology to undergraduates and postgraduates within the School of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham.

Essential

  • Full GMC registration Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register or CCT in Microbiology (or expected within 6 months of interview date)
  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
