Main duties of the job

Assess the care needs of patients and develop a programme of evidence based practice care which is evaluated and amended as appropriate without direct supervision.

To maintain clinical competence through CPD and mandatory training requirements.

To ensure clear and timely record keeping of all assessments and care provided

Maintain good communication with patients and their relatives including the MDT

Regularly take charge of the clinical area in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility or his/her deputy

Utilise NUH evidence based policies and guidelines to ensure safety of care and maintains professional understanding of EBP used

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a registered nurse you will be  responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development of programmes of care ensuring that these are evaluated and amended as appropriate. You will document the condition and progress of patients and report to medical staff and  senior nursing staff any areas of concern and undertake nursing procedures and techniques in accordance with agreed policies and guidelines.

You should be aware of your role with regard to the Medicines Code of Practice, complying with all Trust policies and risk assessments with particular regard to the policies and procedures maintaining staff and patient safety. 

Communication with the multidisciplinary team is essential in order to promote efficient patient care and maintain effective channels of communication. You should report all accidents and untoward incidents to the nurse in charge and complete an incident form in accordance with Trust policy.

Support a culture of teamwork within the clinical area, including supporting and assessing colleagues where appropriate.

Maintain your  own professional competence through on going professional development. Be accountable for your own professional practice and professional revalidation in accordance with The Code (NMC 2015).

Essential criteria
  • Current level one NMC registration
  • Competent in medicines management
  • Evidence of Continuing professional development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of delivering nursing care to a group of patients
  • Supervision of non-registered staff and students.

Communication and Relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate basic IT skills

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate an ability to assess, plan, deliver, prioritise and evaluate patient care nurse role

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate an ability to prioritise own workload and recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations

Physical skills

Essential criteria
  • Dexterity and accuracy in undertaking clinical skills, use of equipment and documentation
  • Competent and capable of using medical equipment
  • Able to undertake patient manual handling manoeuvres and non-patient manual handling manoeuvres

Other requirements specific to the role (e.g. be able to work shifts/on call)
