Nottingham University Hospitals Pharmacy department has an exciting opportunity within our Urgent and Emergency Care (UEC) directorate at the Queens Medical Centre for one Pharmacy Medicines management technician (MMT) to join our team.

Our UEC directorate consists of the Emergency Department, Acute Admissions Unit and AMRA, Level 1 Unit and the Same day emergency care (SDEC) unit.

Our acute medicine admissions unit is one of the largest in the country and has a large clinical pharmacy team consisting of Medical admissions specialist clinical pharmacists, MMTs and MMA’s that deliver an excellent 7-day service

Main duties of the job

Providing support to the specialist clinical pharmacists and contributing to enhancing the patients’ experience through the provision of a professional and effective medicines management service in the UEC directorate

Medicines reconciliation and facilitating a smooth transfer of medication related issues across the interface at admission, discharge and transfer

Managing medications at ward level, checking and assessing patients’ own medication on admission and at discharge, collating medicine information for accurate medicine reconciliation, patient counselling, dispensing and self-checking of pre-labelled medication at discharge

Management and review of stock along with data collection and analysis ensuring that cost effectiveness, efficiency and safety is maximised at all times

Involvement in ward and department projects, clinical audits/data collection, staff management and liaising with other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Whilst this post is commissioned to be full time (equivalent of 37.5 hours per week) we would welcome applications from those wanting a better work life balance. The pharmacy department operates a 7 day shifted working model which will include weekends and Bank Holidays.

The post will be based at the Queens Medical Centre.

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BTEC/NVQ level 3 in Pharmaceutical services or equivalent
  • General Pharmaceutical Council registered Pharmacy technician
  • Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (Accredited scheme or evidence of in-house validations).
  • Knowledge of medicines management, including relevant legislation and policies acquired through NVQ3 or BTEC equivalent level qualification plus specialist training and experience
Desirable criteria
  • Medicine Management Assessments or Validations (Accredited or proof of in-house training)
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of the medicine management technician role and responsibilities within hospital pharmacy.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial knowledge of medicine management procedures and policies
  • Experience in the admission/discharge processes within hospital pharmacy
  • Experience of management and coordination of staff within hospital pharmacy
  • Proven knowledge and experience in using computer labelling and stock control systems within hospital pharmacy • Can demonstrate that they can work on their own initiative but know limits of their authority and knowledge.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of undertaking incident investigations

Communication and Relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • To communicate effectively, clearly and concisely complex or sensitive information relative to medicine management back to patients, staff and colleagues
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with a wide range of staff and patients
  • Demonstrates diplomacy in handling difficult staff situations.

  • Adaptable to change

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Proven evidence of judgement and prioritisation skills with regards to targets, deadlines and stock management.
  • Accurate with good attention to detail
  • Proven experience in problem solving

  • • Evidence of understanding extended technician roles within hospital pharmacy

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience in organising workload to meet pharmacy services and patients’ needs
  • Use own initiative and manage own time and deadlines

Physical skills

Essential criteria
  • Sound Word, Excel skills and be able to retrieve information from the internet
