The AHPs in MHSOP include Occupational Therapists (OT), Physiotherapists (PT), Speech and Language Therapists (SLT) and Dietitians. AHP staff work across a variety of clinical teams and are sometimes a lone professional resource in some areas.

The post holder needs to work collaboratively within the Care Unit, Care Group and externally to ensure the provision of evidence-based practice by AHPs.  The postholder has a key role in directing the responsiveness of the AHP provision across teams and informing the strategy to ensure effective AHP provision.  The Care Unit AHP lead is responsible for leading quality assurance and improvement projects where AHPs are the lead resource, clinical priorities such as falls prevention and reduction are highlighted and driven by the AHP lead.

The MHSOP AHP lead will have specialist knowledge and skills of AHP practices/roles and be able to advocate for these roles – these will be transferrable skills and be underpinned by clinical experience in relevant areas of clinical practice.  Professional role modelling, advice and guidance is central to the effectiveness of the role.  The AHP lead will lead the recruitment and retention strategy for AHP’s within the Care Unit and ensure that appropriate skill mix for the multidisciplinary teams is represented in services.

The AHP lead has managerial responsibility for the in-patient therapy resource and budget.
