Job overview

The Community CAMHS Service within Nottinghamshire supports Children, Young People and their families where there are emotional and mental health needs. The MHST works closely with and alongside staff in education settings to support the mental health and wellbeing of young people, their families and teachers.

This is an opportunity to be involved with the Mental Health Support Team (MHST) , as a joint initiative between health and education.

We are looking to recruit a further MHST Referral Co-ordinator  to work within our CAMHS Single Point of Access .  This role needs to be undertaken by two individuals in order to support the effective running of the service. This role will work closely with staff in CAMHS SPA and MHST Supervisors to establish cases suitable for brief short term intervention within the MHST. It involves screening referrals, information gathering, there is an expectation that the successful candidate undertake some low intensity supervision training at Exeter University in order to supervise EMHPs in the team.

The role also involves one day a week (7.5) hours working as a Specialist Practitioner in either Bassetlaw or Broxtowe delivering early intervention support to children young people and families around low-level emotional wellbeing needs, such as anxiety, low mood, managing emotions, and sleep.  

Main duties of the job

The Mental Health Support Team (MHST) is a new and evolving service which is available in certain schools in the Nottinghamshire areas. Nottinghamshire Healthcare have been a trailblazer site for the Mental Health Support Team project and have hosted the first operational MHST nationally in December 2019.

 We are an early intervention wellbeing service aimed at providing support for children young people and families around low-level emotional wellbeing needs, such as anxiety, low mood, managing emotions, and sleep.  We link in directly with Nottinghamshire CAMHS teams and provide ‘in school’ sessions to promote a positive mental health.

The post is for a Referral Co-Ordinator 22.5 hours per week who will share the role with the Referral Co-Ordinator already in post.  The successful applicant will also work as a Band 6 Specialist Practitioner in either the Bassetlaw or Broxtowe locality dependent on successful applicant for one day a week, total of 30 hours working week.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role of the MHST Referral Co-ordinator will be to engage in case discussions with other clinicians, liaison with schools, information gathering and frequent provision of safeguarding and safety advice to teachers, parents, young people and their families. The successful candidate will have a good overview of the commissioned remit of the MHST and the roles of different professionals within the team so that they are informed in their decisions about accepting young people in to the service. They will also have extensive knowledge of other services that may be able to provide more suitable support within Nottinghamshire CAMHS and wider partners.

The role of the Specialist Practitioner will include working with young people with increased complexity in one to one and group work, as an early intervention.  There will also be opportunity to develop the whole school approach and provide advice, guidance and support to staff in education.

There will be opportunity to educate and liaise with SLT and pastoral staff at project schools on the interventions delivered by the team which will be brief and focussed on early intervention.

The schools included in this project will have a designated Mental Health Lead, who can refer directly into the service. We work closely alongside these staff as we support them in creating a whole school approach to mental health.

You will work with a variety of agencies to ensure a quality service is provided. You will work alongside more junior members of the team, at times in providing cover for parent, well-being and 1:1 sessions.

There is also an expectation that successful candidates will take up a fully funded place at the Low Intensity Supervision Course at Exeter University (remotely) You must have two years minimum experience post qualification as an Education Mental Health Practitioner to  be eligible for post, given the requirements of the university course

You must also have experience of working therapeutically with children, young people and families where there are emotional difficulties within a CAMHS service. It is preferable if you have experience of working in this capacity within schools.

A full UK driving licence and vehicle for business use is required for this post; however reasonable adjustments will be made as required in line with the Equality Act 2010. 

The MHST cover the county of Nottinghamshire and have bases across the county, the main base for the team is at Highbury Hospital, Nottingham, NG6 9DR.

Essential criteria
  • Ability to identify and triage mental ill health
  • Communication skills in managing risk and promoting safety for young people
  • Knowledge of the commisioned remit of the MHST
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in the CAMHS SPA
  • Experience of working in the MHST

  • Evidence of core profession or Education Mental Health Practitioner engaged in accreditation process with post-qualification experience
  • Registration with relevant professional body

  • Educated to degree level
  • Qualification in therapeutic approaches with children and families eg CBT systemic, solution focused, play therapy
  • Supervision Skills Training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven post qualification experience
  • Experience of Multi agency work, in particular in schools
  • Skills and experience of working with children, young people and families around a range of emotional/mental health, behavioural and additional health or developmental needs.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of the ability to use and provide clinical supervision, and mentoring to junior staff
  • Community experience, working in schools and with families

Knowledge

  • Knowledge and experience of provision of a holistic emotional/mental health assessment particularly within Mental health support teams
