Job overview

We are looking for a Chef to join our Catering Team at The Wells Road Hospital.  If you are someone who is hardworking and energetic with a passion for delivering quality freshly cooked, healthy, wholesome food to our patients, staff and visitors then we would love to hear from you.

We have a position available working 6 hours a day, 30 hours a week (including working weekends and bank holidays).  Shifts are between 7:00am and 6:30pm, the pattern will be discussed at interview.  

This post is eligible for a Golden Hello payment of £2,750 for new starters who are external to the Trust.  This is payable in 3 instalments over a 2 year period.  This payment is only eligible to new starters who do not already hold a contract of employment with the Trust.  This post also includes paid enhancements for unsocial hours working during night, weekends and bank holidays.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the provision of the patient, staff or visitors meals by undertaking specific outlined and approved processes and procedures to ensure the quality and food safety of meals at service are safe and appropriate and within the guidelines of food hygiene legislation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To ensure compliance with the Catering Food Safety Manual, Trust policies and procedures and to the Food Safety Act and Food Hygiene Regulations

To provide assistance and information as required around the patient meals and menus and to provide a point of contact between the catering provision and the wards to identify any issues or specific dietary requirements including allergen information.

Recognised Catering and support services qualification or evidencable working knowledge and experience of Chef and Catering services

Please note that this post does not meet the pay level required for a Skilled worker visa.

Successful applicants with no prior NHS experience would normally be placed at the bottom of the band in line with Agenda for Change. This salary is below the minimum salary required for sponsorship for a Skilled Worker / Health & Care visa. In these circumstances the Trust would not, therefore, be able to sponsor for a Skilled Worker / Health & Care visa.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • City & Guilds 706/2 or equivalent (NVQ Level 3)
  • Recognised Catering and support services qualification or evidencable working knowledge and experience of Chef and catering services

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience as a qualified chef
  • Ability to cook small and large quantities including special diets
  • Allergen awareness
  • Experience in cooking for large quantities including special diets/allergens
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in ordering of supplies

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety
  • Special diets, cultural/ethical menus, allergen awareness
  • Due diligence/HACCP
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an NHS catering environment
  • Knowledge of food legislation

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to cook small and large quantities including special diets
  • Experience of quality monitoring of food production
  • Good communication skills
  • Computer skills

Training

Essential criteria
  • C.I.E.H Level 2 Food Safety Certificate
Desirable criteria
  • Level 3 Food Safety certificate
  • Computer literate

Contractual Requirements

  • Comply to personal appearance standards and personal protective equipment (staff uniform)
Desirable criteria
  • To attend training as and when required on other sites within the Nottinghamshire NHS Trust

Physical requirements

  • Has the physical ability to perform the full range of duties
  • Frequent requirement to exert physical effort To handle food consumables and larger catering equipment
  • To move light furniture items during cleaning
