Job overview

The Dermatology department at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (SFH NHS FT) is a well-established dedicated department based at King’s Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield and Newark General Hospital in Newark. 

The successful candidate is expected to deliver high level dermatology care for general dermatology and skin cancer in the clinical and surgical setting.  The doctor is responsible for running the patch test clinic along with a specialist nurse for patients suspected contact dermatitis. The candidate will also be expected to take responsibility for treating patients with complex inflammatory dermatosis both inpatient and outpatient.

The successful candidate is also expected to do deliver skin cancer care in clinical and surgical setting.  This including been a core member of the local skin cancer MDT but also chairing the MDT and discuss management of complex patient at the specialist MDT as needed.  The candidate is expected to be the Audit lead for dermatology team.

Main duties of the job

The over-riding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.

Whilst on duty a doctor has clinical and professional responsibility for their patients.  It is also the duty of a doctor to:

·        Keep patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) informed about their condition.

·        Involve patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment.

·        Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC) and comply in particular with GMC’s guidance on ‘Good Medical Practice’ as amended or substituted from time to time.

A doctor is responsible for carrying out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in the Job Plan such as:

·        The keeping of records and the provision of reports.

·        The proper delegation of tasks.

·        Maintaining skills and knowledge.

Doctors will be expected to be flexible and to cooperate with reasonable requests to cover for their colleagues’ absence where they are safe and competent and where it is practicable to do so.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Full registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC)
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate thesis
  • Completed fellowship programme
  • Progress towards or attainment of college exams

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work autonomously to a level of defined competencies within Stroke medicine and be an expert decision maker having overall responsibility for patient care
  • Must have completed at least twelve years full time post graduate training (or equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis) with a minimum of six years in Stroke Medicine in the Specialty Doctor or equivalent grade.
  • Ability to maintain clinical credibility and authority with a multi-professional team including senior trainees.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Experience within the specialty in the UK

Management & Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload
Desirable criteria
  • The potential to develop management and leadership skills

Teaching

Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role

Research

Essential criteria
  • Ability to convert research evidence into clinical practice
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals

Other

Essential criteria
  • Communication skills – to have language competency and communication skills necessary to do the job safely & competently
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
  • Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit
  • Ability to participate in specialty out of hours rota
