Job overview
The successful candidate will join a current team of 6 Consultants, and 2 Specialty Doctors. This is a general histopathology post, and the appointee is expected to support service delivery by complementing existing team members.
For a substantive role, the appointee must have full registration with the GMC or be within six months of attaining a CCT in Histopathology at the time of the Appointments Committee. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
The department provides a comprehensive histopathology service with a wide repertoire of specimens including breast, gastrointestinal, general surgical, gynaecological, and urological, ENT, respiratory medicine, lymphoreticular and dermatological specimens. There is no on-site neuro or cardiothoracic surgery or renal unit. Perinatal autopsies are carried out at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Gynae Cervical Cytology service is provided by Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The Department is moving to using digital pathology for primary diagnostics, the appointee will be supported to transition to Whole Slide Image reporting and offered the opportunity to contribute to the future development of digital pathology diagnostics.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to:
· provide advice on the diagnosis, staging and prognosis of patients suffering from disease. Reporting and interpretation of specimen submitted to the department in line with RCPath guidelines.
· take joint responsibility with colleagues for quality assurance within the department including taking part in national external quality assurance programmes, where appropriate.
· participate in the annual appraisal and job planning process.
· work with relevant clinical teams in the provision of comprehensive Histopathology service to the users, including advice regarding appropriate specimen collection and investigations, interpretation of reports and the preparation of policies, procedures and guidelines. Answer phone calls to and from clinical colleagues, if required.
· be jointly responsible for the supervision, training and management of any junior staff in the department.
· be jointly responsible in the smooth and efficient running of the Histopathology department The over-riding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- FRCPath or equivalent
- Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Applicants that are UK trained, must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
- Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
Desirable criteria
- Research degree in Histopathology
