Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and committed individual to join the Microbiology Department as part of Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a Specialty Doctor to join our Microbiology department. This post is initially for one year (extendable for another 2 years subject to performance and departmental need) due to start as soon as possible. You will gain experience in dealing with a wide range of specimen types in our busy department, in a friendly and supportive environment. FRCPath part-1 and previous medical microbiology experience of at least three years is essential. Trust Doctors are not formally approved training posts, but the post holder will have Consultant-led education and supervision and will be supported in their professional development

 

This is a whole time position but candidates wishing to work part-time or in a job share are encouraged to apply. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed with the post holder on a personal basis in consultation with consultant colleagues. 

The successful candidate will be contracted with the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  As a consequence they are expected to be aware of local policies and procedures and to comply with standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  In particular, where medical staff is responsible for the management of employees of the Trust, they will be expected to observe the local employment and Human Resource Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
Desirable criteria
  • FRCPath-1 in Microbiology
  • MSc /MD

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least three years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) in microbiology
  • Experience requisite to meeting all aspects of job plan
  • Understanding of all aspects of specific focus of role

Management

Essential criteria
  • Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload.
  • Able to work well in a multi-disciplinary team and maintain good relations with colleagues

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to contribute to the teaching programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate medical, laboratory and nursing staff
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrates experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching

Other

Essential criteria
  • To have language competency and communication skills necessary to do the job safely and competently
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members, clinicians, GPs, and other agencies
  • Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit
Desirable criteria
  • Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels
  • Evidence of participation in a recognised CPD scheme
