Job overview
This is a 12 month fixed term contract for a Trainee BMS (AFC band 4).
An exciting opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic, professional, reliable and highly motivated Trainee Biomedical Scientist to join the Pathology team on a 12 month fixed term contract. The position will be based within the UKAS accredited Microbiology department at King’s Mill Hospital.
Main duties of the job
An IBMS accredited Biomedical Sciences degree is essential. Applicants who do not hold an accredited degree or applicants who require support with the completion of top up modules WILL NOT be considered for interview, but applicants that have completed all their required top up modules and are awaiting results will be considered.
Full training and support will be given and a training officer will guide you through the IBMS Registration Portfolio over the 12 months of the contract. By the end of the 12 months it is an expectation of the role that you will have successfully completed the registration portfolio and the external assessment and be eligible to apply for HCPC registration.
PLEASE NOTE WE CANNOT GUARANTEE A SUBSTANTIVE POST WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE END OF THE 12 MONTHS.

Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Some knowledge of laboratory investigations, processes and procedures
- Knowledge of laboratory safety, including infectious diseases, COSHH, spillages, waste disposal.
- Computer and keyboard skills together with experience of common software packages
- Ability to work accurately from written protocols.
Qualifications

- Possess an HCPC approved degree

- Prepared to follow in service training course
Experience
Essential criteria
- Capable of frequent and extended periods of concentration
- Ability to work accurately and to show attention to detail
- Good verbal and written communication skills.

- Experience of working in a Diagnostic Laboratory
Contractual
Essential criteria
- Willingness to work with potentially infectious substances (with appropriate H&S guidance)
- Demonstrably able to cope with workload peaks and demands or other pressures.
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
