The Buckinghamshire Adult Autism Diagnostic and Intervention Service is excited to be recruiting a 0.6wte band 7 Speech and Language Therapist to join our established and supportive multi-disciplinary team.  

 

The post holder will lead the provision and development of the SLT component of the Bucks Adult Autism Diagnostic and Intervention Service. The team is based within our specialist mental health services for adults and older adults in modern facilities at the Whiteleaf Centre in Aylesbury.

 

In this role you will provide high quality diagnostic and intervention assessments, and plan and implement programmes of care for autistic individuals, individually and in group settings. You will use evidence-based practice, providing specialist clinical advice to others regarding the management and care of patients with communication differences.

 

There are opportunities for innovative working and Quality Improvement projects. Key areas could include PBS, Zones of Regulation and aids to communication.

 

The job is varied and challenging and offers the opportunity to work within multi-disciplinary teams. The successful candidate will have HCPC registration and proven abilities, as a SLT in a variety of settings.

 

The post holder will have strong links to the wider AHP leadership within the trust. Additionally, there are excellent opportunities for on-going training and networking with other Speech and language therapists across the mental health directorate.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

 

  1. To deliver evidence-based therapy SLT assessment and intervention programmes which meet the specific needs of the clients.
  1. To independently manage the assessment and intervention of communication disorders for clients across Buckinghamshire Mental Health Directorate.
  1. Provide specialist assessment and intervention for autistic clients with communication differences.
  1. To be responsible, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, for diagnosing, developing, implementing, and monitoring appropriate interventions for patients within the ASD team.
  1. To support and advise the team on SLT interventions which meet the specific needs of the clients.
  1. To actively contribute to a variety of multidisciplinary meetings e.g., Clinical Team meetings and Care and Treatment Reviews (CTR).
  1. To develop and evaluate education and training for all professionals and team members in the ASD and other relevant teams in communication and SLT interventions.
  1. To actively take students on placement.
  1. To participate in the supervision of Speech and Language Therapists, assistants, and volunteers.
  1. To contribute to multidisciplinary team assessments.
  1. To write reports reflecting specialist knowledge pertaining to this client group.

Clinical:

  • Develop and provide a high standard of assessment and intervention for clients referred to the service.
  • To complete a thorough assessment, identify clients’ strengths and needs and to co-ordinate and facilitate suitable SLT interventions to meet those needs.  This should use SLT models of practice and standardised assessment tools and follow evidence-based practice.
  • Interventions will be delivered on a group and individual basis, including running an established post-diagnostic group programme for adults with autism.
  • Review and evaluate each client’s progress regularly with the client, relevant professionals, and other members of the team.
  • Participate in relevant clinical meetings and case conferences.
  • Compile written reports as required and generate and maintain accurate intervention records on electronic health records. Maintain appropriate data protection.
  • Monitor and evaluate the SLT provision to the team.
  • To work as an autonomous practitioner. 
  • Develop and maintain relevant therapeutic activities as appropriate to the client group served and ensure that, where possible, interventions are evidence based.
  • Work within the Care Programme Approach (CPA) framework, where appropriate

Service Management & Development: 

  • In consultation with users and clinical teams, plan and provide appropriate SLT assessment and interventions for clients referred.  To do this within defined resources, taking account of equality and diversity issues and using evidence-based practice.
  • To take a lead in developing the SLT role and contribute to the achievement of performance targets for the ASD Service.
  • To be involved in QI projects.
  • Review and monitor the effectiveness of the SLT service, in conjunction with the AHP Lead for Buckinghamshire.
  • To participate in the process of establishing, monitoring, and reviewing policies and procedures common to the profession and clinical services in the care group and Trust.
  • To co-operate with other members of the NHS, Social and Community Services, Primary Care and Voluntary Agencies to plan and develop services.
  • To be involved in the recruitment and selection for posts where appropriate.
  • To participate, where appropriate, in the delivery of service improvement plans for SLT Trust wide.

Communication:

  • To participate in meetings relevant to service provision.
  • To meet regularly with relevant senior staff concerning service provision – e.g Buckinghamshire AHP Lead and ASD Lead.
  • To liaise with members of the profession and clinical teams, to collaborate, develop and provide an integrated service.
  • To develop good working relationships with other services within the Trust and externally as appropriate, including voluntary agencies, social care providers, employment, and education providers.
  • To keep the relevant senior staff informed of matters affecting the provision and development of the service within the clinical areas.

Budget Responsibilities:

  • In conjunction with the Service Manager, to ensure that the SLT provision operates within the allocated budget and that procedures are followed concerning use of monies in accordance with standing orders.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • To take responsibility for the safe provision, use, maintenance and storage of equipment and materials for self and others.
  • To follow procedures concerning the management and ordering of materials/equipment.
  • To carry out other administrative tasks in relation to service management as required.

Legislation:

  • To be aware of and comply with the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act.  To comply with all policies and procedures for the Trust and care group, and other legislation relevant to Mental Health Services.  To ensure that staff comply with these requirements.
  • To work in accordance with the Royal College of SLTs Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and Health and Care Professions Council Standards of Practice.

Professional Development:

  • To participate in regular clinical/managerial and professional supervision and the locally agreed personal development review process.
  • To incorporate CPD in work routine and keep up to date in clinical knowledge and skills.
  • To utilise skills in reflection on a regular basis and attend training events and courses relevant to professional and service development.
  • To maintain continuing professional development profiles as evidence of CPD in accordance with Health and Care Professions Council Standards of Practice. 
  • To ensure that in addition to mandatory/statutory training, the pro rata minimum of 9 hours per year of specialist CPD is completed.

Development of Others:

  • To support, supervise, appraise and coordinate the development of the team and other specified posts where relevant in conjunction with the senior managers for the team.
  • To contribute, as necessary, to practice education for SLT students and to the wider practice placement programme.
  • To contribute to the training and development of professional and honorary staff as required.

Clinical Governance:

  • To collect and present statistical and performance information as required.
  • To initiate, lead and participate in clinical governance and audit activities as required by the service, care group, Royal College of SLTs and more broadly within the Trust. 
  • In conjunction with leads, to establish and monitor professional and clinical standards, and to take action to raise standards where necessary.
  • To participate in and support research projects in the Trust and to develop research initiatives as appropriate to the service.  To encourage and support staff in the process of research.
