Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for 2 Assistant Psychologists to join our Learning Disability Teams: one to be based in the North Oxfordshire team, and the other in the City & South team.  

In this role, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills including intervention and assessment skills within the Learning Disability MDT. Previous assistants within the team have successfully gone on to train as Clinical or Counselling Psychologists, or have secured other assistant psychologist roles within the NHS.

Main duties of the job

Within the role you will have the opportunity to learn to deliver a range of assessments: eligibility, dementia and behaviours of concern. You will also have the opportunity to observe qualified and trainee psychologists administer more specialist assessments including autism.

You will have the opportunity to deliver a range of interventions: individual therapy (as appropriate to the client and presenting problem), and indirect support to carers and family teams (team formulations, co-creating PBS plans, carer support and education), depending on experience and competence.

We champion staff-wellbeing.

We work within a hybrid working in office/at home/in the community model and find ways to maintain social as well as professional links. The team cover a wide geographical area and visit service users in the community. Across the teams we also benefit from free tea and coffee as well as free parking at some of our bases.

Person specification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • High level communication skills
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information
  • Understanding of the needs of people with mental health problems or LD
  • Ability to apply psychological knowledge to LD context
  • Understanding of psychology applied to mental health and LD care
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of databases and data analysis
  • High standard of report writing
  • Knowledge of wider context of LD

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Upper 2nd class honours degree or higher in psychology
  • Entitlement to GBR
Desirable criteria
  • Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Work with people with mental health problems and/or LD
  • Experience of data entry and data analysis
Desirable criteria
  • Paid work in direct care provision (mental health and social needs)
  • Work with people with LD and/or autism
  • Previous assistant psychologist experience
  • Experience of neuropsychological testing

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines
  • Ability to interact with people with mental health problems and/or LD
  • Ability to work independently, reliably and consistently
Desirable criteria
  • Interest in working with people with LD

Contractual/Other Requirements

  • Ability to accept and use supervision
