The Adult Mental Health Team (AMHT) in Banbury are advertising for a Community Support Time and Recovery (STR) Worker to contribute to caring for and supporting adults with severe mental illness within the Banbury and surrounding villages.

The North & West Oxon AMHT serves a diverse and multicultural population and support adults of working age (18-65) who are experiencing severe and enduring mental illnesses requiring specialist care and treatment. The Banbury team covers the geographical area of Banbury and surrounding villages, as well as the market town of  Brackley. The team is part of the wider AMHT patch which includes the Witney AMHT that covers Witney and Chipping Norton. Both teams align with clusters of locality GP practises. We work in collaboration with partnership agencies such as Mind, Restore, Elmore and Response.  This role gives an opportunity to visit patients in their own home, in the community or their supported living accommodation.

You will join a dedicated staff group providing assessment and evidence based interventions to a wide range of people in the north of the county and the surrounding areas.  

Main duties of the job

As a Support Worker you will be instrumental in our service and delivering recovery focused interventions (for example emotional and practical support) to service users under the guidance and support of qualified mental health clinicians and team leaders. You will need to be a dedicated, patient focused and highly motivated individual, who has some experience of mental health support work, working effectively as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team.

We use the principles of a flexible assertive community treatment (FACT) model of healthcare, which enables us to be focused on the recovery of the patient through a team/multidisciplinary (MDT) approach; with expertise from doctors, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, support workers and psychological therapies staff.  We strive to provide person centred evidence-based care to patients, where possible working collaboratively with their families and carers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Banbury Team is highly supportive and committed to delivering a high-quality patient and carer journey. Regular supervision will be provided, and you will be encouraged and supported to undertake any training relevant to your interests and personal development. The Leadership Team, including Claire, Jane, Julie, Tom and Laura are all committed to the well-being and development of the staff working in the team.

You will be offered opportunities for professional development and opportunities to influence and contribute to service development. You will be provided with regular supervision, appraisal and support.  

In The AMHT, we strive to deliver accessible, responsive and high quality care with the highest regard for service user experience.  Support workers will, alongside other multi professionals, use their skills and personal qualities to support the clinical team to make this a reality. 

As a Support Worker you must be able to demonstrate Trust values in delivering care to others. You will be able to follow plans of care flexibly and dynamically in challenging and changing circumstances. Oxford Health works in partnership with  third sector providers as part of the Oxford Mental Health Partnership (OMHP). Support Workers must have the skills and aptitude to work creatively and proactively with our third sector partners.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of mental health services (as a worker or service user / carer)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with service users and their families/carers who are experiencing mental health problem
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of dealing with people in emotional distress

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • The post holder will be expected to attend and fully complete a nationally agreed induction programme and undertake an on-going training to achieve a minimum of NVQ2 / VRQ
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ level 2 or 3 or other relevant qualifications

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to form positive working relationships with service users,
  • Ability to make a positive contribution to improving the quality of life for people with mental health problems
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing at all levels
  • Empathy and sensitivity to the needs of people with mental health needs

Other

Essential criteria
  • Able to travel within the geographical work area in an effective manner
  • Ability to access a range of settings including visiting people at home
  • Be committed to continuous development of job related knowledge and skills, including essential IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Word processing and other IT skills.
