CONSULTANT IN PAEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY
Applications are invited to apply for the above post for the Department of Paediatric Oncology and Haematology at the Children’s Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.
This is the first advert for this 10PA replacement post. The post-holder will join a well-established multidisciplinary team which provides a comprehensive service for the Thames Valley and surrounding region. The appointee will have the opportunity to work closely with consultants and allied professionals from Children’s Hospital Oxford, as well as a number of other regional Hospitals.

To join the existing members of the Paediatric Haematology/Oncology team in providing a regional service for children with cancer or haematological disorders and work with team members in providing an on-call service covering a 1 in 6/7 rota.
The postholder’s duties will be primarily at the Children’s Hospital Oxford (CHOx), located in the John Radcliffe (JR) Hospital, but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations and outreach clinics.

Each consultant has a number of areas of interest/responsibility within the service depending on interest and experience. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be responsible for the management of patients with solid and CNS tumours, aged 0 – 19 years and also lead the neuroblastoma and /or sarcoma service with involvement in developing the TYA service. The postholder will continue to develop innovative models to ensure the ongoing care of patients under the age of 16 years and continue the harmonisation of transition to the TYA/adult services, linking closely with the well established late effects service for young people post 16. It is also anticipated that the postholder will also work with the Oxford onco-fertility team to support a rapidly growing national service, delivering a service currently unique in England.
The post-holder is expected to work as an integral member of the team, attending and contributing to the established Oxford multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
The postholder will provide oncological advice and support to the other paediatric specialists within CHOx Children’s Services and to paediatricians within the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance. Haemophilia support and advice is provided by a dedicated Haematology service.

There are approximately 115 new referrals per year of children with malignant disease. The
number of referrals has been increasing year on year.
The service has weekly malignant haematology multidisciplinary team (MDT), solid tumour &
lymphoma, Teenage and Young Adult (TYA), psycho–oncology, neuro-oncology and sarcoma
meetings. Patients are reviewed and management plans enacted at these meetings. All MDTs are
well supported by integrated surgical oncology, pathology and diagnostic radiology teams
Clinical:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the management of patients with solid tumour
malignancies aged 0 – 19 years. The post holder will participate in the 1 in 5/6 “consultant of the
week” system, providing cross cover for in-patient activity, dealing with new referrals, initial
diagnostic work-up, planning and delivery of treatment and care.
The post-holder will work as an integral member of the team, attending and contributing to the
established Oxford multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings. The post-holder will share
responsibilities to review patients on the day unit, supporting the fellows and staff grades, and
independently lead outpatient clinics.
The postholder will provide advice and support to the other paediatric specialists within CHOX
Children’s Services and paediatricians within the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance.
Chemotherapy prescribing
Outpatient Care:
On-treatment outpatient care is delivered on Kamran’s Day Care, a separate area for the
administration of chemotherapy, blood products and assessment of patients. The successful
candidate will be expected to see patients and support the clinical fellows/speciality doctors in Day
Care.
Follow-up clinics for patients not on active treatment occur in the dedicated Children’s Outpatients.
Children’s Outpatients is also the site for haematology follow up and benign haematology clinics,
e.g. haemoglobinopathy. A large and active Paediatric Haemophilia service is based in the
outpatients clinic at CHOX.

- MRCPCH or equivalent
- Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) and be on the specialist register, or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. OR, Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT Ideally the CCT or its recognised equivalent should be in Paediatrics
