Job overview

The clinical component of the post comprises 10 PAs - Post CCT Fellowship in clinical Endocrinology.  The postholder’s duties will be at Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.   

Main duties of the job

 This is a prestigious whole-time position as post CCT fellow in Endocrinology. This position will allow high calibre Endocrine trainees the opportunity to gain further subspecialty experience in Endocrinology and prepare for future subspecialty consultant roles in a tertiary centre. This post is based at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Churchill Hospital, Oxford. The post holder will be expected to carry out outpatient clinics in general endocrinology as well as subspecialty clinics including neuroendocrine tumours and pituitary disease. There will be an opportunity to develop subspecialty training in an area of interest in the department. There will be named supervising consultants for all clinics. There will be some diabetes exposure during the period of the fellowship and this has been in the area of antenatal clinics for previous post- holder. This will be discussed in more detail with the postholder at the start of rotation.  It is expected that the post holder will oversee teaching of more junior colleagues on a regular basis. A detailed job description will be agreed with the departmental clinical lead  at the start of the post.  

It is expected that the postholder would remain up to date with the trust statutory and mandatory training and engage with the GMC requirements for revalidation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES: 

Clinical: The clinical component of the post comprises 10 PAs.  The postholder’s duties will be at Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.   

 Teaching:   Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust (OUH) is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations.   It is expected that this will be an integral part of every day clinical activity.  The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.   

Clinical Governance: The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies. 

Personal and Professional Development:  The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust.   Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.    

Management:  The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust.   He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical department under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair. 

Risk Management:  The management of risk is the responsibility of everyone and will be achieved within a progressive, honest and open environment. 

Staff will be provided with the necessary education, training and support to enable them to meet this responsibility.   Staff should be familiar with:

  1. Major Incident Policy
  2. Fire Policy

Staff should make themselves familiar with the ‘local response’ plan and their role within that response. 

Responsibilities for Health & Safety: The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties and responsibilities of this post are carried out in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Statutory Regulations and Trust Policies and Procedures.  This will be supported by the provision of training and specialist advice where required. 

Infection Control:  Infection Control is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non clinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts’ Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA. 

All staff employed by the OUH Trust have the following key responsibilities: 

  • Staff must decontaminate their hands prior to and after direct patient contact or contact with the patient’s surroundings.
  • Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust.

Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.

Qualifications

  • Registerable medical qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Name on Specialist Register in Endocrinology on date of taking up appointment.
Desirable criteria
  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD, PhD)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Wide experience in all aspects of Endocrinology culminating in award of CCT or equivalent
  • Experience with clinical presentation and investigation of patients with pituitary tumours, endocrine and adrenal cancer.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in the treatment of pituitary disorders

Management and Leadership

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams
Desirable criteria
  • Management course and/or qualification

Audit

Essential criteria
  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed audit projects.

Research and Publications

Essential criteria
  • Experience in management of Databases
Desirable criteria
  • Publication of peer reviewed original research
  • Participation in commercial or non-commercial research
  • Knowledge and qualification of the Good Clinical Practice in medical research
