This is a highly responsible role, and the successful applicant will be part of a team that is dedicated to improving the lives of cancer patients in the Thames Valley and more broadly across the UK. The post holder will work between the Haematology Trials Unit, Late Phase Oncology Trial Unit, both based at the Churchill Hospital, and the OUH Research and Development Team. The two trial units conduct a wide spectrum of Phase I to Phase III clinical trials in cancer with the aim of transforming care of cancer patients. The post holder will be responsible to manage all the income generated from clinical trials is captured, invoiced and received and that expenditure (principally on staff costs) is monitored by  Haematology  trial units. The post holder will work closely with the R&D Service Manager , the data teams in both trial units, OUH R&D finance teams and the medical and nursing management of both trial units. Ensuring the financial sustainability of both trial units is critical to their success.

This job description outlines the core requirements expected of a Band 5  Business Support & Performance  Officer. As such the list below is not exhaustive. Specific requirements related to any specialist area of practice will be outlined with the prospective post holder and included as an addition to these generic descriptors as role specific prior to employment. 

  1. On a weekly basis working with the trial unit data teams to record money to be billed on each clinical trial conducted by both units, to sponsors of clinical trials. This constitutes the income of each unit.
  2. Contacting trial sponsors to make sure invoices are issued promptly.
  3. Checking invoices from trial sponsors to correct any irregularities in invoiced issued by trial sponsors and working with trial sponsors to resolve any queries.
  4. Providing OUH Finance correct invoices for OUH finance to bill.
  5. Checking with OUH Trial Finance that invoices have been paid.
  6.  On a monthly basis reviewing the expenditure of each unit. This will mainly consist of staff costs.
  7. Provide monthly Excel spreadsheet reports of income and expenditure and providing forward yearly forecasts, to the leadership of each trial unit.
  8. Provide budgets for new staff posts as they are created.
  9. Liaising closely with various external and internal stakeholders e.g. researchers, NHS Departments, Commercial Companies on all issues affecting the trials portfolio as required.

  1. To ensure that the funding due from the activity of both trial units is fully invoiced and received on a timely basis. This will involve close working relationships with clinical trial sponsors and their delegated trial unit teams.
  2. To work with the OUH Research and Development Finance Team to ensure accurate invoices are issued by clinical trial sponsors.
  3. Resolving any queries and issues with payments from trial sponsors.
  4. To monitor the expenditure of both trial units. This will involve close working with OUH finance teams.
  5. To generate monthly reports of trial activity, income and expenditure and discuss these with the management of each trial unit.

  • Studied a professional accountancy qualification with evidence of passes at the minimum of the foundation levels, or a degree incorporating finance modules. Alternatively have relevant experience from within a financial environment. Good general education, including, Maths and English GCSE (or equivalent
  • Good IT skills, a working knowledge of spread sheets , Power BI and KPI indices. Experience of a range of accounting duties at this or similar organisations unless compensated for by a degree incorporating finance modules or by AAT/CCAB qualification Must display evidence of numeracy.
