Job overview

The post holder’s duties will be to provide a comprehensive musculoskeletal imaging service across the Trust. They will be part of a team, with 12 musculoskeletal radiology consultants already in post, with a range of sub-specialty interests.

The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre has a world-wide reputation for excellence in orthopaedics, rheumatology and rehabilitation, and is a Regional Sarcoma Centre. Specialist services are supported including bone infection and sports medicine. The radiology department is key in supporting these services, as well as providing musculoskeletal imaging services for primary care.

Main duties of the job

There are multi-disciplinary meetings for sarcoma, spine, trauma, sports, rheumatology, bone infection and specialist orthopaedics. The post holder will provide imaging across the full range of modalities including ultrasound, MRI, CT and fluoroscopy. Ability to perform image-guided intervention such as biopsy and injections is also a requirement. The post holder will work across site at the Horton and Oxford Hospitals. It is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations although travel will be remunerated.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students and training junior doctors, radiology trainees and radiographers. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review and the Oxford Deanery is keen to remunerate these activities.  Consultants involved in Medical Student teaching can receive an honorary Clinical Lectureship from the University

 

Person specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • FRCR or equivalent
  • CCT in Radiology or registration on GMC Specialist Register in Radiology, or within 6 months of achieving CCT at the time of interview.
  • Evidence of subspecialist training in MSK
Desirable criteria
  • Additional post graduate medical qualification
  • MSK CCT

Experience

Essential criteria
  • General training in Radiology to Specialist Level or equivalent.
  • Additional work experience in MSK as above.
  • Experience of cross-sectional imaging in a tertiary referral centre
  • Ability to make decisions at consultant level
Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship in MSK Radiology at a recognised training centre
  • Experience in working in a MSK centre.
  • CT and US interventional skills to support on call

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of leadership skills
  • Evidence of organisational skills, communication skills, professional and personal skills to undertake effectively the role of consultant in radiology in a major teaching hospital.
  • Evidence to support good professional skills as required for good medical practice.
  • Evidence to support good interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence to support good communication skills.
  • Evidence of previous teaching experience at various levels.
  • An understanding of clinical governance and experience of clinical audit.
  • Evidence of interest in research activity including publications and presentation(s) at national or international meeting(s)
Desirable criteria
  • Management training
  • Knowledge of organisation of NHS and governments agenda for modernisation of the NHS. Evidence of management training.
  • Good computing skills, word processing/ spreadsheet and web browser use.
  • Post graduate teaching experience
  • Post-graduate research degree
