Job overview

Witney Emergency Multidisciplinary Unit (WEMU), is a dedicated adult ambulatory medical unit situated in Witney Community Hospital in West Oxfordshire. The unit provides high quality care for mostly older adults in an ambulatory setting seven days a week and supports 4 in-patient beds. The unit is open from 9.00-20.00 weekdays and 10.00-16.00 at weekends and public holidays (medical staff work 9.00-17.00 at weekends and public holidays) although in this role the work is Monday-Friday 9.00-17.00.   

There are close working links with many community-based teams including Hospital at Home, Community Specialist Nurses, District Nurses, Community Therapy Services and Single Point of Access.

Main duties of the job

The work involves triaging referrals, acute same day assessment and management of ambulatory adults with a variety of medical problems and being responsible for up to four short term community hospital in-patient beds available within Witney Community Hospital. 

The unit works closely across our ambulatory care units in Abingdon Emergency Multidisciplinary unit (AEMU) and the Rapid Access Care unit (RACU) in Henley.  This is part of a county wide ambulatory by default’ pathways working in collaboration with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to avoid acute hospital admissions.

The post will appeal to innovative and high calibre doctors including acute medical physicians and  gerontologists with specialist interest in ambulatory care, community care and care of the older patient

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice
  • Up to date with appraisal and revalidation requirements
  • PLAB
  • MBChB or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP
  • Higher degree in relevant field of medicine, post grad teaching, relevant post grad diplomas
  • Diploma of Urgent Care

Clinical Experience & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Active clinical experience in Acute Geriatric OR General Medicine OR General Practice
  • Demonstratable experience working in Ambulatory care and community settings and with older people
  • Ability to make appropriate assessments in the management of complex medical problems in older people and facilitate discharge planning
  • Ability to make decisions at appropriate senior level
  • Ability to work within clinical governance guidelines.
  • Evidence or providing good teaching and supervision to trainees to the level of GMC accredited educational supervision level as well as other members of the multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to identify and address own educational needs
  • Evidence of clinical leadership role demonstrating accountability for quality of care, financial controls and efficient management of workforce
  • Knowledge of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) and its application.
  • Knowledge of Digital Health systems and virtual patient care
  • Awareness of Urgent Community Response
  • Awareness of frailty pathways, national and local urgent care agendas and commissioning
