Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a pro-active and dynamic Health Care Support Worker Immuniser to join our patient focussed and supportive immunisations and vaccination team in South Powys.  We have opportunity for a full time position (37.5 hours / 5 days a week), however part time may also be considered.

The post holder will work  to support immunisation and vaccination programmes for the citizens of Powys and will receive specific training to administer vaccines to patients and staff groups  working under the direct supervision of a Named Supervisor (registered practitioner) and in line with the National Protocol.

The role will involve working flexibly across Powys Teaching Health Board  to ensure the citizens of Powys have access to vaccination and immunisation as close to home as possible.

Main duties of the job

  • As an immuniser you will work closely in a small team, providing a range of vaccinations to eligible cohorts.
  • Assess the health of citizens prior to administration of the vaccine and recognise any changes post procedure and react accordingly.
  • Communicate sensitively providing reassurance and empathy to citizens who may be nervous or require additional support due to lack of capacity or age e.g. children.
  • Ensure that high standards of infection control are integral to all aspects of clinical practice.
  • Support the pharmacy process to ensure safe supply, storage and administation of vaccines; this includes following process to maintain the cold chain for vaccines within the vaccination centre and out in the community.  To undertake daily stock checks, accept deliveries and prepare vaccines for transfer. 
  • Maintain stores under instruction and prepare equipment for outreach clinics and visits to care homes.
  • Transfer equipment and vaccines to and from sessions (between various locations).
  • Maintain skills, knowledge and training as identified nationally and locally e.g. Basic Life Support, Anaphylaxis. Undertake specific training related to vaccine programmes. Have a general awareness of current immunisation issues and controversies that can impact on uptake.

Essential criteria
  • NVQ / QCF level 3 or equivalent
  • Good level of general eduacation to include English and Maths
Desirable criteria
  • undertaken the national minimum standards and core cirriculum for immunisation
  • Basic life support and anaphalyaxis training
  • evidence of continuing personal development relevant to the role

Experience
