Job overview
This is a fixed term post offering successful candidates an exciting opportunity to work for the Welsh Blood Service (WBS) in the Stock Holding Unit (SHU) section of our North East Wales Base in Pembroke house, Wrexham as a part-time Associate Practitioner as a member of the Distribution staff.
The SHU supports the hospitals of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) by providing blood and blood products on a 24/7 basis, and the post holder will represent the WBS and our values when dealing with our customer hospitals. We’re looking for someone with a minimum HNC/HND qualification in a relevant science discipline or equivalent transferable skills who is confident in laboratory environment, but full training will be provided.
The post holder will be required to work variable shift patterns according to the requirements of the service. Typical shifts will fall between 08:30-16:00 and 16:00-23:30, with a requirement to participate in a 24/7 on-call rota approximately once a week taking emergency calls from hospitals and attending site to issue urgent additional orders overnight, weekends and bank holidays. To be able to suitably support the on call aspect of the role, it is necessary that the successful applicant is able to attend site within 30 minutes. Full UK driving license required to include category B (Car) entitlement.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will perform a variety of routine and specialist technical tasks which will include selection & distribution of blood, blood components and commercial products, maintenance of cold chain logistics and occasional delivery duties. The successful applicant will work at a level to ensure that all processes meet the requirements of the UK Guidelines for Blood Transfusion and the EU Directive as inspected by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This rewarding role will suit enthusiastic and well-motivated individuals with an eye for detail who are able to work independently as well as part of a small welcoming team.
This post is fixed term/secondment for 14 months to meet the needs of the service. . If you are interested in applying for the secondment position, you must obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying for this post.
