The Musculoskeletal Service Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin brings together partner organisations across the county, including Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust, Shrewsbury & Telford Hospitals and the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, to provide quality care to patients with musculoskeletal concerns within the population of Shropshire.

This post would be suitable for a dynamic individual who is enthusiastic and motivated to continue their professional development. This will be supported via access to a wealth of knowledge and experience in the form of consultants, GP's with special interest, Advanced practitioner's as well as clinicians with special interests.

Main duties of the job

  • To assess, diagnose/interpret and manage own highly specialist caseload of complex musculoskeletal patients as an autonomous physiotherapist in accordance with Professional Code of Conduct and Health and Care Professions Council Regulations, within an outpatient environment. 

  • To develop, through experience and postgraduate training, the highly specialist knowledge and clinical skills required for working within an MSK outpatient setting 

  • To triage incoming referrals to the service as well as review onward referrals from physiotherapy departments to ensure thresholds are met, where they are not, to provide the support, mentoring and training required to develop more junior staff to ensure evidenced based treatment is provided.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • The post holder will be a highly specialist autonomous practitioner to perform advanced assessment of patients with diverse presentations. To use highly specialist clinical reasoning to diagnose/interpret and then develop, deliver and adapt individualised treatment plan for patients within a specialist clinical area.  

  • To ensure that contemporaneous treatment records and activity data are maintained in accordance with Trust and Professional standards and where appropriate other members of the team. 

  • To be responsible for organising and planning own caseload and where appropriate other members of the team, to ensure the needs of the service are met, readjusting plans as situations and priorities change. 

  • To maintain a professional portfolio for continuing professional development to demonstrate highly specialist clinical competencies and compliance with Trust policies and Professional code of conduct.  

  • To create an environment that supports lifelong learning through the provision of highly specialist pre and post registration training.    

  • The post holder will work in close co-operation with colleagues within all departments to deliver a cohesive service that is led by user need ensuring high quality of patient care and optimal patient flow and safe timely discharge. 

  • The post holder may be required to work flexibly, as part of the cover arrangements within their competence across all departments as required. Notification of flexible working may be communicated at short notice. 

  • To have highly effective communication skills and demonstrate these on a continual basis with patients, carers, colleagues and the wider Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT).  

  • To undertake research and audit projects as a regular part of the role. 

  • To use the Trust values at all times as a framework for own behaviour and encourage others to do likewise, ensuring the values underpin all that is done. 

  • To collaborate with the Outpatient Physiotherapy Service Lead in the operational management of the physiotherapy department to develop and maintain an efficient and effective service for MSK patients referred to the MSK Outpatient team. To deputise in the Outpatient Physiotherapy Service Lead’s absence 

  • To provide induction, supervision, assessment and training to students on clinical placement, liaising with the student coordinators as appropriate and providing evaluation and feedback to the Higher Education Institutes (HEI) as appropriate. 

  • To maintain competence to demonstrate the safe use of equipment to patients and carers as appropriate to role. 

  • To regularly undertake research and audit activity as part of the role. To critically evaluate current research and apply where appropriate to practice. 

  • To demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of current research, national guidelines and legislation and ensure this knowledge is disseminated to the Clinical Service Manager and Professional Lead and the wider MDT.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma/Degree in Physiotherapy
  • Registered with the HCPC
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development including attendance at recent post graduate courses relevant to musculoskeletal practice
  • Masters level specialist training or equivalent experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of extensive experience in relevant area of clinical practice
  • Evidence of teaching / presentation experience
  • Experience in audit and research
  • Experience of supervision and delegation
  • Extensive post registration experience working at a senior level within speciality area

Knowledge and Skills

  • Evidence of independent decision making and problem solving
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to receive and provide highly complex or sensitive information
  • Good working knowledge of IT programmes to include Word, Excel, Power Point and Publisher
