Main Responsibilities

Responsible for day-to-day clinical photographic workload to meet the demands of the service.

Responsible for providing clinical photographic images for patient records, education, research, publication and diagnostic purposes.

Assisting in the co-ordination and organisation of photographic or video productions and public relations photography, involving the scheduling of staff, patients and accommodation to meet the deadline required.

Assist Medical Illustration colleagues to ensure photographic work maintains quality standards.

Responsible for adhering to and interpreting issues concerning clinical images including data protection, consent, Caldicott guidelines and other relevant ethical and legal considerations.

Organise, plan and priortise workload according to clinical and non-clinical demand.

Key Tasks & Duties

Clinical photography of patients on appropriate ward, clinic, outpatient locations and in controlled studio environment as part of on-going clinical assessment, diagnosis, education and research.

Clinical photography of intraoperative surgical procedures and associated surgical and anatomical specimens in operating theatre under sterile conditions.

Undertake clinical photography through correct interpretation of specific request instructions in accordance with relevant policy and to ensure the subject matter has been captured accurately and to a high standard.

Clinical photography of patients, which involves capturing images that are often of a highly sensitive nature on an irregular basis, e.g. trauma, infected/necrotic wounds, genitalia, NAI.

Use of variable lighting techniques within mobile and controlled studio environments to best demonstrate patients’ condition to full potential, e.g. cross lighting for dermatological conditions.

Undertake clinical photography during frequent exposure to infectious conditions (e.g. MRSA) and traumatic, distressful and emotional circumstances.

Use of appropriate photographic standardisation techniques for consistency, e.g. scoliosis series, rhinoplasty and dermatology views.

Use of clear, informative and empathetic dialogue to gain patients’ agreement to participate in photographic procedures, referring any concerns to Medical Illustration Manager.

Understanding of the consequences and assessments of Gillick/Fraser Competency of minors by ensuring patients understand the process of the request, e.g. consent.

Ensuring that ethical practices are followed in particular when it is of a highly sensitive nature.

Use of tact, diplomacy and persuasive techniques during emotionally troubling situations and challenging patient behaviour and hostility to ensure photographic objective is achieved, e.g. learning disability, dementia.

Operation of professional industry standard image management software for downloading, processing and archiving clinical digital photographic images.

Awareness of the need to process images with no enhancement, manipulation or alteration, being mindful of the consequences regarding patients’ treatment, taking into consideration potential implications for misdiagnosis and areas for litigation, e.g. medicolegal cases.

Production of non-patient, PR and stock photography to support Trust communications, executive and Trust management teams.

Image reproduction through use of camera and scanning equipment and export of radiological PACS images for use in book publications, journals, poster and lecture presentations.

Responsible for safe use of equipment used for patient photography including appropriate decontamination after appointments, e.g. intraoperative sessions.

Secure management of photographic and image storage equipment to uphold service user requirements; reporting any faults or concerns to Medical Illustration Manager.

Responsible for the safe use of computer hardware and equipment.

Liaising with Graphic Designer regarding photographic content for design projects, e.g. Annual Report, Patient Information material, posters and flyers.

To access patient information using Web based PACS and EPR systems.
