Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join The Cataract Suite at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a Band 2 Trainee Ophthalmic Assistant working within our busy cataract theatre as a circulator to support the Surgeon and scrub Nurse. Following the successful completion of a range of Ophthalmic competencies there will be progression to a Band 3 Ophthalmic Assistant post.

We are looking for a caring and motivated individual who has a genuine interest in Ophthalmology.  The successful candidate must have good communication skills and be able to work well as part of a friendly team in a busy and dynamic environment.  In return, the post offers the opportunity for further development and training within Ophthalmology.

There will be cross site working between Cataract suite and Ophthalmology Outpatients at The Princess Royal Hospital Hospital, Telford, so flexibility is a must.  Some weekend and evening working will be required.

Main duties of the job

The position will involve undertaking a variety of skills such as circulating within cataract theatre, carrying out visual acuities, visual field testing, ocular coherence tomography and assisting with minor ops.

There will be a requirement for accurate input of patient details and diagnostic testing results into a dedicated ophthalmic database.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Maths and English at GCSE level 9 - 4 (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 in health related subject

Knowledge and Experience

  • Previous experience of working in care
