Urology Cancer Care Navigator

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a caring, compassionate and motivated  individual to work with our Clinical Nurse Specialist team as a Cancer Care Navigator working specifically with the urology patient group.

The successful candidate will work alongside our existing Navigators and is funded initially for 12 months to be an integral part of improving urology patients pathways.  Full time hours are available and part time applications are welcomed, please note your working preferences as part of your supporting statement.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this role is to complement the existing Urology team.  To help the patients through diagnosis, treatment pathways and follow up. To ensure the provision of safe, seamless, appropriate service. This helps maximise the health and quality of life of patient and carers.  The role will involve a significant amount of patient contact on a regular basis.

Working as part of the Urology team, offering and following up Holistic Needs Assessment, coordinate the care of the person living with cancer non-complex needs so they can access the right help at the right time.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of an NVQ level 4 or level with relevant experience in Urological Care or willing to undertake further training
  • GCSE or equivalent level including Maths and English
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of continued professional development willingness to undertake learning and development courses

Knowledge and relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of relevant cancer treatments and interventions and terminology
  • Experience of working with cancer patients
  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • Experience of working within multi-professional teams
  • Experience in the use of data management
  • Experience of co-ordinating patient workload
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of national cancer strategies and policies
  • Experience of SaTH Somerset Cancer Register
  • Experience of SaTH information systems

Skills and ability

Essential criteria
  • Ability to prioritise own workload
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) with patients and staff at all levels
  • Ability to show empathy and understand the difficulties faced by people affected by cancer
  • Ability to deal with complex and difficult emotional situations
  • Able to work effectively as part of a multi-professional team
  • Able to meet changing demands and priorities with a flexible approach
  • Competent in the use of information technology systems
  • Understanding of patient centred care
