Job overview
We are looking for a keen and motivated individual to join the Cancer Services Team to provide administrative assistance within the Urgent Suspected Cancer Referrals office based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
The successful applicant will be patient focused; have excellent communication and organisational skills; be familiar with all of the Trust’s computer systems including Somerset and have excellent IT skills including Excel. Previous experience of administrative and telecoms work is essential to the role as well as a resilience to deal with the fast pace of the role and the emotional and sometimes distressing nature of cancer.

Main duties of the job
- To undertake booking and scheduling duties in the Urgent Suspected Cancer Referrals Office. The patients are contacted by telephone.
- To provide delivery of a patient cancellation/postponement service.
- Using the Trust systems PAS, SEMA, ERS and Somerset Cancer Register.
- To develop & maintain effective communication skills, liaising with patients, GP’s and internal/external contacts.
- To be responsible for ensuring that the booked appointment is made within the designated time limit.
- To be responsible for ensuring that new patient clinics are booked to their maximum capacity.
- To be responsible for the checking and registering of new patient referrals and the distribution of letters for grading by individual consultants.
- To meet performance standards specific to the area they are working in.
- To maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- To work within well defined boundaries, using initiative to make planning decisions as required. They will have access to manager / supervisor at all times
- To be responsible for assisting in the training of new staff.
Working for our organisation
The successful applicant will be joining the Urgent Suspected Cancer Referrals team based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The team is a small, dynamic team of Coordinators and 1 Team Leader but who also are part of the larger Cancer Services Department. As a department we work closely with the clinical team within the Trust to promote a friendly and approachable atmosphere to deliver a high standard service.

Qualifications/Education
Essential criteria
- English GCSE at Grades 9 - 4 (or equivalent) or equivalent qualification or experience
- NVQ 2/3 or equivalent level of knowledge and experience
Experience
Essential criteria
- Administrative Experience
- Experience of working with Software Programmes
- Experience of dealing with patients/clients
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Computer literate with IT skills, eg, use of Microsoft Office
- Excellent Telephone Manner
- Able to use initiative.
Desirable criteria
- Understanding or knowledge of booking processes across primary and secondary care
- Knowledge of the NHS e-Referrals Services (E-RS)
- Understanding and knowledge of "choice" in healthcare.
