Job overview

There is a whole-time post for a Consultant in Cardiology at the Royal United Hospital, Bath. An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic and ambitious individual to join a dynamic team of consultants. The post holder should have specialist expertise in advanced echocardiography (TOE, DSE) to complement the existing consultant team.

The post holder would become part of a strong and established team of 11 Consultant Cardiologists that work very well together in a supportive environment. All Consultants contribute to the general inpatient, on-call and outpatient services. Further support is provided from 1 permanent Staff Grade and 4 Specialist Trainees, 1 IMT3 Trainee, 2 Clinical Fellows, 2 Research Fellows, 6 Medical Nurse Practitioners and 6 resident doctors.

The Cardiology Centre in Bath is situated on 2 floors in the central block of the RUH. It consists of an 8 bed Coronary Care Unit, 36 bed Cardiac Ward, the nurse-led Cardiology Day-Case Unit where TOE is undertaken; for outpatients we have 3 consulting rooms with 5 co-located echocardiography and diagnostic rooms, and pacing and 12-lead ECG departments. There are 2 Cardiac Catheterisation Suits with recovery for 4 patients and a radial lounge with 3 chairs. 

Candidates should be on or eligible for inclusion onto the GMC Specialist Register for Cardiology, be within 6 months of their expected date of obtaining a CCT (or equivalent) at the time of the interview or be pursuing a future CESR application.
 

Main duties of the job

The holder of this post will be a Consultant in Cardiology with special interest in cardiac imaging. The post holder will be actively engaged in the development and delivery of currently offered services both in terms of general Cardiology, and in the development of their subspecialty interests. Additional expertise or interest in Adult Congenital Heart Disease is desirable. The post will contribute to the provision of all cardiac services to the local population and will be based at the RUH.

There will be no mandatory commitment to General Medicine on call.

The holder will participate in audit and directorate meetings and undertake administrative duties as required by the Lead Clinician of Cardiology.

A commitment to maintain professional expertise by attendance at meetings and courses is expected, and completion of diaries for CPD is essential. It is also essential that you have an annual appraisal, and undergo revalidation as required.

An interest in teaching and research is expected with participation in projects, courses, etc. to enhance the standing and role of the Department and Trust Attendance at, and organisation of, meetings is expected.

The post holder will be expected to cover for colleagues absent on leave (prospective cover).

The post holder will have access to a mentor to support new consultants in the transition from trainee to consultant, and in moving to a new hospital.

  • MRCP(UK) or equivalent

Clinical

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST
  • Ability to perform basic practical procedures relevant to acute medicine

Management and Administrative

Essential criteria
  • Ability to advise on the efficient and smooth running of acute unselected take and a speciality unit

Teaching
