Job overview
We have a great opportunity to join the Dietetic team at The Royal United Hospital in Bath. We have a vacancy for a permanent part-time (0.8 WTE) Band 6 Surgical Dietitian. The successful candidate will be part of the Surgical Dietetics team and will be involved in delivering 0.6WTE specialist surgical inpatient services , and 0.2WTE to the general medical caseload.
The role includes supporting the dietetic service on the general medical wards for one day per week, and the Intensive Care Unit during staff absence. Training and support will be provided as needed.
Main duties of the job
Undertake specialist assessments of patients, including those with diverse or complex presentations using clinical reasoning and assessment skills to obtain a nutrition related diagnosis and inform dietary management. Make dietary recommendations based on the interpretation of biochemistry, anthropometrics, anatomy and physiology, clinical condition/prognosis and other physical parameters. Be competent in the use of oral, enteral and parenteral routes of administration for nutrition support, whilst ensuring plans are patient centred and evidence based.
Organise and plan own caseload to meet Dietetic service and patient needs, readjusting plans as situations and priorities change; and seeking guidance from senior dietitians as required.
Work as part of the acute dietetic team with the responsibility of delivering a service within surgical and general medical wards, and the Intensive Care Unit during staff absence. This includes meeting service priorities on a daily basis and ensuring a high standard of clinical care. Work within Trust clinical guidelines and BDA guidelines; and to have a working knowledge of national and local standards monitoring own and others quality of practice as appropriate.
Contribute to the development and implementation of policy and service changes within surgical and general medical wards to ensure best practice is achieved. Adhere to BDA Code of Professional Conduct and Practice at all times. Maintain and develop specialist knowledge of evidence based practice within Dietetics and the wider clinical management of patients on the surgical wards and critical care.

Essential criteria
- Degree or post graduate or other qualification acceptable to HCPC for registration as a dietitian in the UK
- Evidence of further postgraduate study and continuous professional development in relevant areas
Other
Essential criteria
- Post-registration experience in-patient cover of medical and surgical wards.
- Up to date in general dietetic practice
- Experience of complex nutrition support
- Experience of developing and delivering education to groups
- Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team
- Experience of working with individuals with barriers to communication
- Evidence of participation in clinical governance issues in relation to dietetic practice
- Evidence of participation in audit activities in dietetic practice
- Excellent written communication skills
- Presentation, problem solving and organisational skills
- Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines
- Flexible and adaptable
Desirable criteria
- British Dietetic Association and relevant specialist group membership
- Post registration training in communication and behaviour change skills.
- Teaching qualification.

- Familiar with dietary analysis packages, electronic records and electronic prescribing systems
